Five Creative Lessons About Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet from the Chicago Rotation Roundtable

Here is a complete set of lessons about Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

They were originally written and posted by the Chicago Area "Western Rotation Model Roundtable" Group.

Summary of the workshops in this Rotation:

  1. Art Workshop: Make "Story Memory Jars" with items that remind us of this story and the other events of Holy Week and what Jesus did for us.
  2. Storytelling and/or DRAMA/PUPPET Workshop: Included are two activities 1) Scripture told in a fun way with Sock/Foot Puppets: children perform as puppeteers, voices, singers, and 2) Students are then given one of four "Foot" Bible Verses to review, plan and perform, again with Sock/Foot Puppets. Both are video taped.
  3. Puppets Workshop: Students hear the story, then create a storyboard to assist them with acting out the story, using sock puppets they create.
  4. Science Workshop: Take a barefoot sensory walk; discuss ways we serve others by putting our best foot forward; create a bag of foot-soaking salts.
  5. Missions Workshop: Put together "foot care" kits for special people.

Foot Washing Bible Passage:

John 13: 1-17

Key/Memory Verse:(several are suggested)

  • I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.(Matthew 25:40)
  • I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (Romans 10:15)
  • And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! (Romans 10:15)

The Main Idea
"Serve to Love, Love to Serve"
Jesus wanted to show the disciples how much he loved them, so he gave them an example of how they (and we) should treat one another.

Goals

By the end of this rotation, the students will:

  • Become familiar with the events of the story.
  • Learn the facts of this Bible story and where it is found in the Bible.
  • Understand the importance of serving others.
  • Share God’s love with the recipients of our mission project.
  • Realize that by serving others we are serving Jesus.
  • Know that Jesus cares about even the small details of our lives, like dirty feet.
