Overview: Jesus as a Child in the Temple

Overview of this Forum

Jesus as a Child in the Temple gives us a good opportunity to talk to our kids about their attitude and participation in Sunday School and Worship.

The story has some interesting cultural/historical references in it, including, what the Temple was all about, Jesus asking questions of the Teachers (which is a style of learning), and the concept of "Bar Mitzah" --the age of 12 or 13 when Jewish boys were supposed to claim their faith and tradition for themselves. Modern tradition also has the bat mitzvah for girls.   Sunday School is part of that process in the Christian church, ...which is something we can certainly emphasize.

"Taking Responsibility for your Faith"

The story is only included in Luke, who seems very interested in presenting Jesus as a Jew and filling in the other details of his life. It's as if he's saying, "Jesus was also like you" --which is a powerful statement to children. "Be like Jesus."
