Reply to "ART Workshop Lessons and Ideas for the Wedding at Cana"

Suggestions for the above Art Project:

First....Thanks Cathy and Tim for a good Art lesson!

1.  Needs some additional content about WHAT TO LOOK FOR in the various artistic depictions of the story. For example, in one famous artwork, we see Jesus acting calm and sure, while others around him are upset. Why would Jesus be able to act like that?  What does he know that the others don't?   In another painting, we see Jesus dancing at the wedding. Does that surprise you to see our Lord dancing?

2. Where to find the artwork?  Google Images. They can be saved and shown on a laptop (or projected in the room), or printed.

3. Alternate Art Project:

Option #1:  S&S Craft makes a water bottle "holder" that you can color/paint.

Amazon sells them under the name of "Color-Me Water Bottle Holder Craft Kit".

Design the holder with key images, words, and verse about God's goodness/feast.

Then...have the kids mix up various kinds of koolaid. holder But here's the thing:  put the powdered koolaid in NEW containers and LABEL the various powders with good things found in God's Kingdom.   Demonstrate then let them mix various powders together to create a unique flavor and color.Let them try it out in small amounts. Use small cups of water to experiment.

Discuss, THEN have them create a powder mix in the correct proportion to go in a BOTTLE OF WATER. Cap off and shake, and put in their new holder.

They have just made their own sweet reminder of the Wedding Feast Jesus wants us to celebrate.

Additionally, they could also make their own LABELS for the bottled water. And they could make extras to share or give out to members.

Option #2:

VERY LARGE OUTDOOR STORAGE JARs/POTs can be found online and at larger craft stores.  They make them out of plastic.  OR, you could get a bunch of 5 gallon water jugs with handles. (Check with your local water company for jugs that they are not going to refill due to scrapes).

On one side of the jug (or on some of the jugs) have the kids decorate it with the words "water" and "common gifts".

On the other side of the jug (or other jugs) decorate it with the words "wine" and images/words that describe GOOD THINGS IN THE KINGDOM (wine= love, grace, joy, peace, serving, feasting, sharing, forgiving, dancing).  These words would describe the Kingdom Feast which Jesus is giving us a "foretaste" of in this miracle.

You could then add some printed versions of the images you found on the web, --cutting them out and applying them with glue to the jar. You could also have kids use paint pens to draw themselves into the feast with Jesus on the jug.
