Last Supper ~ Lord's Supper

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

The following resources can be used to enhance the lessons in the Last Supper~Lord's Supper Rotation lesson set or your other Communion instructional needs.

See our post on Creative Communion Instruction Ideas for related content. Many of the ideas below will work great for a program of Communion instruction.

ART

  • Make a Seder plate (idea from Neil)  http://www.makit.com/
This was one of the best Art Workshop projects I've ever done.  Kids study then design their own "Seder/Passover/Last Supper" plate.  The designs get sent to "Makit," and baked into plastic.  Cool.

  • Create a “stained glass” window depicting some symbols of our faith, with the center of the window being the center of the cross and the symbols of Holy Communion. Refer to the Art Workshop lesson from State Street UMC, Bristol, TN. (Picture of completed window shown at right.)

  • Create a "remember" plate. Refer to the Art Workshop lesson from FUMC, Ann Arbor, MI.

  • Decorate challis (cups). Refer to the lesson plans from River Community Church, Prairieville, Louisiana and Canfield Presbyterian, Canfield, Ohio

  • Make bread boards. Refer to the lesson plans from Grace Point Church, San Antonio, TX and from Augustana Lutheran Church, St. James, MN.

FINE ART

  • A WEB SITE with links to fine art illustrations of many stories about Jesus (idea from Amy): Jesus Christ - His Life and His Story https://www.jesus-story.net/.

  • Looking for an ILLUSTRATION of the Last Supper, besides that very familiar one by Da Vinci! (idea by Lisa M.) For instance Dali’s Last Supper is far more interesting and filled with symbolism.  Could follow it with Photography - have class re-enact the famous Last Supper painting, then photograph it.

BANNERS / TEXTILE

"Communion A-Z:  Feasting at God's Table" by Wezeman, Phyllis Vos, Anna L. Liechty, Jude Dennis Fournier & Judith Harris Chase.  Prescott, AZ:  Educational Ministries, 1999. This book provides information, instructions, and diagrams for making an A-Z banner to explain the Sacrament of Communion.  (Available from p.wezeman@comcast.net)

COMPUTER SOFTWARE

  • "Jesus in Space" CD by Sunday Software.  Mission #3 is an interactive lesson about the Last Supper that takes place on "Planet Whammo".   Learn the story through a Whammo quiz game, Seder Meal Grocery Game, Whammo Lab game which teaches the connection between the Passover-Sedar meal and the Last Supper, and lastly an interactive slide-show about Communion/Eucharist (used in this lesson set's computer workshop).
This software is FREE to supporting members! Check it out.
  • "Life of Christ" CD- #31  New Meaning to the Passover Meal.
Note: Discovery Interactive’s "Life of Christ" CD has gone out of print (its material has been turned into an online course). Learn more here!
  • "Play & Learn" CD- Last Supper (Out of print, but left here for all those churches who have it.)

COOKING

  • Make some of the traditional foods associated with a Passover Seder meal. Refer to the Cooking Workshop lesson from State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol, TN.

  • Make unleavened bread. Refer to the Cooking Workshop lesson from Grace Point Church, San Antonio, TX. Perhaps stomp some grapes!

DIORAMA, Story Table, Lego, Toy Models

What is a Diorama / Story Table Workshop?

Look in "Workshop Design & Resources" - under "OTHER  Workshop Concepts" link.

The Last Supper Building Set

  • "The Last Supper" by Trinity Toyz, 2013, 761963380102.  A 286 piece block set includes 13 figures, compatible to Lego.  Note:  figures are just slightly smaller than Lego figures and have no legs as they are dressed in biblical costume.  Set builds a 3 walled room with windows, floor, table.  Includes: 13 wine goblets, 4 plates, and 8 assorted size loaves of bread.

  • Make your own "Last Supper" wooden set as shown how in this post by "abcalis" (link) with wooden peg dolls, felt clothes & belts made from felt & leather.

See a "Last Supper" Diorama (Lego) Workshop written by Jaymie Derden from State Street UMC, Bristol, VA link.

Had a thought regarding doing a diorama workshop that you may want to have the kids break into groups and create 3 different dioramas; The Passover, The Last Supper, and Communion (at their church).  Then discuss the transitions (what's the same, what's different, why?), as you and the children walk through and compare each diorama, starting at Passover.

DRAMA

  • "The Humongous Book of Bible Skits for Children's Ministry", by Group Publishing, 9780764430831.  Page 160 - The Last Supper.  This book includes CD with sound effects for each skit.

  • Blacklight song idea:  use "The E-U-C-H-A-R-I-S-T Song" find song information under MUSIC - prop suggestions: use large letters to spell E-u-c-h-a-r-i-s-t, pick out other words to make additional props, also include props of instruments you hear in song that you can replicate so the kids are playing them.  Lots of neat ideas!
Blacklights - Check out link here in the "Blacklight Manual" - for details of how we used Blacklights in drama.

MUSIC

  • "Remember Me" found on the "Friends & Heroes" CD.  You Tube link: http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhFBX5ZSySo
  • "Remembrance (Communion Song)", sung by Matt Redman, YouTube includes words link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oCNwIA6xLc Found on his CD titled "We Shall Not Be Shaken" CD, 2009, 5099952222023.

  • "The E-U-C-H-A-R-I-S-T Song" (Children's First Communion Song). Mary Zitnik is the artist and the title of the CD is Totally Catholic.  You Tube with lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GEqnKMN1zE  Very upbeat and fun!  Check out note under Drama for using this with Blacklights.

  • Suggestion:  When searching use "Communion Song" for lots of hits of different artists and different songs.

Uses for YouTube Clips/Videos:

  • Use in your your opening time.
  • During Children's Time to promote the upcoming rotation story.
  • Instead of Journaling for Older kids - Most of the time I look for music videos that relate to the theme/story we're studying.
  • Use two or three different ones when no video is available for your bible story.
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utpt5S_bHrs (2:02 minutes) by Phil Vischer, creator of "Buck Denver asks 'What's in the Bible?'" on using the Last Supper to explain Communion to kids. This link would be a good one to pass on to parents.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6FmbcAIygY   (2:22 minutes) Kidmo: Johnny Rogers: The Last Supper.  Focus on Remember (also mentions words to receive and believe),  Loved the sticky notes opening.
