Wormy Note:

During renovation, our reviewers decided to KEEP this lesson set, even though it references some very specific details about the mission program of the Immanuel Church.

It serves as a great example of how, from time to time, it's a great idea to take the right Bible Story, and design your lessons for it so that they tie into your congregation's specific mission and ministry efforts.

You are welcome to post your own similar approach.

  • Crayons, markers, pencils
  • White board & marker to demonstrate how to draw a sheep

Presentation

Opening- Welcome and Lesson Introduction:

Greet the children and introduce yourself.

Opening Prayer:

Lord, you told Peter to “feed My sheep.” There are many people who are hungry and lonely. Help us to help them.

Dig - Main Content and Reflection:

  • Ask, “Has anyone seen sacks like these before? Tell me about them.”
  • Describe the Feed My Sheep program. It is named after something Jesus told to Peter.
  • Child/Leader reads the Bible story:
After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to Peter and six other disciples. Peter and the disciples had fished all night and hadn’t caught anything. Jesus appeared and said, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find a catch.” The disciples obeyed Him, and they caught so many fish in the net they could not haul the net in. When the boat landed, the disciples saw that breakfast was prepared – fish and bread. Jesus said, “Come and have breakfast.” When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” Simon said, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My lambs.” (John 21: 1-15)
  • Leader asks children to decorate and fill the Feed My Sheep sacks
  • Children should NOT put their name on the bag.
  • Leader should suggest a theme for the pictures.
  • Ask children to bring boxes of cookies & crackers next Sunday to put in the sacks.
  • After the activity, store the bags in classroom for that grade.
  • Activity (5 minutes) – if needed: Fisherman maze

Closing:

End with a prayer.

In Faith Quest, children are studying Jesus’ miracle of feeding 5,000 people.

On Sunday, January 19, Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade children in Faith Quest will walk to St. John’s Cathedral to see the St. John’s Food Bank.

We need your permission to take your child (ren) to St. John’s during the Sunday School hour (9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.). The shepherds for each class will escort the children to the Food Bank. St. John’s Cathedral is around the corner from Immanuel Lutheran Church, 775 N. 8th Street, in Boise.

The purpose of this activity is to give the children first-hand experience in giving to a food bank and to help them understand what Immanuel members do for the poor and hungry people in our community. They will bring one sack with food to donate to the Food Bank. We are asking that each child bring a box of cookies, crackers, or cereal to put in the sack. Sacks will be made during the previous Faith Quest sessions.

  • Children will learn that when we share, God can do great things.
  • Children will learn that God will also provide what we need.

Leader Preparation:

  • Read the scripture ahead of time.
  • Gather the materials.
  • Preview the video.

Supplies List:

  • Small loaf of bread
  • 2 videos
  • Globe or world map
  • Video player & TV

Presentation

Opening - Welcome and Lesson Introduction:

Greet the children and introduce yourself.

Open with a prayer.

Opening Prayer:

Lord, you are so great! You provide what we need. Help us to share with others. Thank you that even a little gift can do great things, when You are involved.

Dig-Main Content and Reflection:

Video
(15 minutes): Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible: The Miracles of Jesus, ISBN 0-7662-0197-x. Start at the scene after the beheading of John the Baptist, showing Jesus choosing His disciples. Stop at the end of the feeding of the 5,000 story, when the disciples get back into the boat.

Questions before the video:

  • Show a small loaf of bread. Ask: How many sandwiches could you make from a loaf of the bread that the boy had?
  • How many people would 5 loaves of bread feed?

Questions after the video:

  • Why didn’t the little boy want to share, at first?
  • What did he share?
  • What happened after that?
  • What do you have that you can share with other people?
  • Repeat that “a little gift can do great things.”

Video (12 minutes): excerpts from Mission to the Nations (Rev. Paparao Yeluchuri, 2000). Play the entire video.

Before the video:

  • Ask the children to point out India on a world map or a globe. Tell the children that the video shows people in India. Rev. Paparao Yeluchuri made the video. He is the head of an organization called “Mission to the Nations” based in Kakinada, India.
  • Mission to the Nations serves the poor people in India. The organization also sponsors schools for kids who live on the streets, and sewing classes for widows.
  • The video also has a section showing ministry to people with leprosy, an infectious disease caused by a bacteria. Lepers can experience progressive paralysis, ulcers, gangrene, “nutritive disturbances”, and damage or loss of their fingers, hands, arms, toes, feet, legs, ears, and nose. Remind the children that last year they studied the story of the Ten Lepers.
  • Child/Leader reads Bible verse: “Taking the five loaves and two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.” (Matthew 14: 19)

After the Video:

  • Ask the children what scenes they saw in the video. Did anything surprise them?
  • Repeat that “a little gift can do great things.” Sunday school offerings for this rotation, up to $50, will go towards feeding the lepers in India through the Mission to the Nations program. (This is per agreement with Rev. Yeluchuri. He will send back photos of the leper feeding if we donate the $50. 200 lepers can be fed with $50.).
  • Point out a poster board with information about Mission to the Nations leper feeding and other programs.

Closing:

End with a prayer.

Script for the Feeding of the 5000 (for 1st through 4th grades)

Notes: Jesus and two disciples start at the back of the sanctuary, in the leftmost aisle.

The other players start at the back of the sanctuary, in the center aisle. When the narrator speaks, the actors do as the narrator says.

Philip: Jesus, Jesus! We have some news.

Jesus: What is it?

Philip: John the Baptist was beheaded.

Jesus: [looks very sad] Let’s go away by ourselves for a while, to someplace quiet.

Narrator: The disciples and Jesus get into a boat and cross the Sea of Galilee towards Bethsaida. [Jesus, Philip, and Andrew make rowing motions up the aisle towards the front of the sanctuary.]

Crippled Person: Look! They are going to Bethsaida! Let’s get there first!

Narrator: A great crowd of people ran ahead to the hillsides near Bethsaida. They get there before Jesus. [All the other characters run up the aisle to the front of the sanctuary, and stand on the steps, waiting.]

Narrator: Jesus got out of the boat and saw the huge crowd. [Jesus, Philip, and Andrew arrive and get out of the boat.] He felt compassion for the people.

Jesus: You are like sheep without a shepherd.

Crippled Person: Jesus, Jesus! Heal me! I am crippled!

Jesus: [puts his hand on the person] Be healed!

Crippled Person: [jumps up and down] My legs! They are healed!

Leper: [shows his fists] Jesus, Jesus! Heal me! I have leprosy!

Jesus: [puts his hand on the person] Be healed!

Leper: My hands! They are healed!

Blind Person: Jesus, Jesus! Heal me! I am blind!

Jesus: [puts his hand on the person] Be healed!

Blind Person: My eyes! They are healed!

Jesus: Stay for a while, and let me tell you a story.

Narrator: The people stayed, and Jesus taught them many things. He healed the blind, the sick, and the crippled. They stayed for hours. It is now nighttime. People started to get hungry.

Hungry Person: I’m getting hungry!

Philip: Jesus, this is a deserted place, and it’s getting late. Send the crowds away. Then they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves.

Jesus: They don’t have to go away! You give them something to eat.

Philip: There are thousands of people here! Two hundred day’s wages would not be enough to buy food for this crowd!

Narrator: The twelve disciples looked through the crowd. Andrew found only one boy with some food. Andrew brought the boy to Jesus.

Andrew: Here’s a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these for so many people?

Jesus: Bring the loaves and fish to me. Have the people sit down on the grass.

Narrator: The people sat down in groups of fifty. [Everyone except Jesus sits down] Taking the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves. [Jesus does this] He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. [Disciples feed the people]

And all ate and were filled. [All people have happy faces]

Jesus [to his disciples] Gather up the leftovers, so that nothing may be lost.

Narrator: The disciples picked up the leftovers and broken pieces, and filled twelve baskets.

Philip: How many people are there?

Andrew: About five thousand men, plus women and children!

Blind, Crippled, Hungry, Leprous People: He is the Prophet we are waiting for! Let’s make him king!

Jesus [to his disciples] It is time to go. I’m going up the mountain to pray. You go ahead in the boat.

Narrator: The next day, in Capernaum, Jesus explained the meaning of the sign.

Jesus: I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Making bread.

Lesson Objectives:

  • Children will learn how to make St. Martin’s communion bread
  • Children will remember Jesus’ words, “I am the Bread of Life.”

Leader Preparation:

  • Read the scripture ahead of time.
  • Gather the materials.

Supplies List:

  • See recipe on the next page. Please practice making the bread before you teach!
  • (optional) T-shirts or aprons to cover the children’s clothes
  • (optional) Samples of types of pasta or other breads

Presentation

Opening - Welcome and Lesson Introduction:

Greet the children and introduce yourself.  Open with a prayer.

Opening Prayer:

Lord, you are the Bread of Life. You promise that anyone who comes to You will not hunger or thirst. Help us come to You.

Dig - Main Content and Reflection:

Before cooking:

  • Have the children listen to and repeat the Bible verse: “Jesus said, ‘I am the Bread of Life.’”
  • Leader: Everyone in the world eats some kind of bread. Bread as a food is considered necessary for life.
  • What kind of bread do you like?
  • What other kinds of bread are there?
  • Rice, pasta, and cereal are also types of bread. What kinds of rice, pasta, and cereal are there? (Leader can bring samples)

Discussion during the cooking:

Leader: After Jesus’ miracle of feeding the 5000, more and more people followed Jesus. He wanted them to believe in Him and follow Him, not just try to get bread from Him. He said, “I am the Bread of Life.”

Child/Leader reads: The next day, the crowds looked for Jesus. When they found Him, He said, “Truly, try, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled. Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man shall give to you, for on Him the Father, even God, has set His seal.”… Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (John 6:22 – 35)

  • What do you think “Bread of Life” means?

The “Bread of Life” can mean that Jesus meets our basic needs. He makes our lives full. He satisfies us in our spirit.

  • How do you feel when you are hungry?
  • Have you ever been disappointed? Disappointed? Lonely? Scared?
  • Is anyone already tired of any of the toys you got for Christmas?

Leader: Some people try to fill up their lives with things. They are hungry inside, but cannot get satisfied. They are lonely, even in a room full of people. They are scared, even when they are safe. Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life.” He can satisfy us. He can help us through lonely times. He can protect us when we are scared. We should love and obey Him, and go to Him for our satisfaction.
