Felted Coasters, Balls, Walls & Roof for a House

I have to share this activity that we did at VBS this year. The kids made felt coasters and the preschoolers each made felt balls and they collectively made felt walls and a roof for a house that can be used in telling the bible story Mark 2:1-12 (Man Through the Roof).

Felting is a WONDERFUL activity to do with children. We used red and white merino wool roving purchased from Halycon yarns.

You need:

  • sushi mats
  • pie tins
  • and glycerine soap

It is a very repetitive process that produces amazing results and is excellent to convey those two passages. If you are interested in more info, email me.

Some lessons here at Rotation.org that have used felting in their Art Workshops:

  1. Art:  Children will create felted sheep pictures from sheep's wool in this "Psalm 23" lesson written by Jaymie Derden.
  2. Art: Children will create wet felted sheep finger puppets, for this "Lost Sheep" lesson written by Jaymie Derden, which they use in their drama workshop (link below).
Drama: Children will retell the story of the "Lost Sheep" lesson written by Jaymie Derden, using the felted sheep finger puppets previously made in their Art Workshop.

How to Felt

Hi,
When heat, water and pressure are applied to wool rovings (wool that has been carded or combed) it will turn the fluff into felt.

It is a very repetitive process so the kids really enjoy it.

Where to purchase Supplies

This is the site for purchasing wool rovings. One bag will be sufficient for 10 children if you are using 2 colors then 2 bags will be sufficient for 20 children.

Link has gone dead and replaced with this one, not sure if one bag is still sufficient.

Felt Balls and Felt House Cont'd

For the preschoolers we had them make felt balls and as a group they made the sides of a house that I then put together (hot glue), cut a hole in the roof and cut a door and we then raffled it off at our funfair evening event for a preschooler to take home. Worked out great and hopefully that child will be retelling the story using the cool house that they helped make. The kids loved rolling there balls and we did have them roll white over red. GREAT activity.
