I don't have a lot of books I use for the Art Workshop but here is one:

  • Hume, Helen. A Survival Kit for the Elementary/Middle School Art Teacher. West Nyack, NY: Center for Applied Research in Education, 2000. ISBN 0-87628-456-X.

Reply to this post if you know of books that are helpful in planning art projects or in executing certain art techniques. Please include ISBN numbers.

USING THUMBPRINTS & FINGERPRINTS to make animals, people, tell whole stories.

Lots of fun and great for those kids who say "I can't draw".

  • "Great Thumbprint Drawing", By Ed Emberley, Little Brown & Company; (May 2, 1994), 0316236683.
  • "Fingerprint Drawing", By Ed Emberley's, Little Brown & Company; 1st edition (April 1, 2001), 0316233196 .

There are many other Ed Emberley Art Books for Kids that may be helpful. He has books on animals, faces, transportation etc. that break down everyday things into basic shapes to help the young artist learn to draw and have fun!

"Art, Kids and Christian Education" by Ardys Koskovich Sabin, Publisher: Augsburg Fortress, ISBN 080666407X

is high on my list for how to use art, rather than craft.

  • "Discovering Great Artists: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of the Great Masters". by Kohl, MaryAnne F. and Kim Solga. Bellingham, Washington: Bright Ring Publishing, Inc., 1997, 0935607099.

For Creation, we looked at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and then the children used the frescoe technique to interpret the Creation themselves.

This book has all sorts of lessons on great artists and their artworks and techniques. Many of these great artists painted religious subjects. After studying the Bible story and a great artist's artwork, let the children experiment with the artist's style and technique to do their own painting, sculpture, collage, etc. for that Bible story.

  • "Art in Story: Teaching Art History to Elementary School Children". by Saccardi, Marianne.North Haven, Connecticut: Linnet Professional Publications, 1997, 020802431X.

Another wonderful secular book that looks at artists and periods and styles and then has the children experiment with that style.

Mary Ann Kohl's books are all great. Three favorites that I use are Mudworks, Preschool Art and Scribble art. These have every recipe that you could imagine but are secular so you have to figure out how to use them in connection to the scripture. That's the fun part!

  • Kohl, MaryAnne F. "Mudworks". Bright Ring Publishing, March 1992. ISBN: 0613839854
  • Kohl, MaryAnne F. and K. Whelan Dery. "Preschool Art: It's the Process Not the Product". Gryphon House, 1994. ISBN: 0876591683
  • Kohl, MaryAnne F. and Judy McCoy. "Scribble Art: Independent Creative Art Experiences for Children". Bright Ring Publishing, March 1994. ISBN: 0935607056
