Editor's Note:
During our restructing of this forum, several reviewers recommended reformatting the following script as an interactive "NewsRoom" drama workshop in which the kids BECOME the various items in the Tabernacle and are interviewed by an "Ace Reporter". The lampstand, for example, dresses as a lampstand and must answer questions about its function.
See Neil's notes below on that which we also preserved.

We all "adapt" each others ideas, and one good idea leads to another. Please feel free to add your inspirations and suggestions.



A Drama Workshop Script

Scripture Reference:

Exodus 35

Memory Verse:
2 Corinthians. 9:7 "You should each give what you have decided in your heart to give. You shouldn't give if you don't want to. You shouldn't give because you are forced to. God loves a cheerful giver."

Lesson Objective:

  • The children will experience the design of the tabernacle as they see pictures of the furnishings and perform the skit.
  • The children will learn about the way the people worshipped God in Old Testament times and compare it to how we worship now.

 

Leader Preparation:

  • Read the scripture ahead of time.
  • Go over the script.
  • Gather the materials.

  • Photos printed from http://www.bibleplaces.com/tabernacle.html with facts on the back.
  • Invitations for the skit performance
  • Bronze altar
  • Basin

Presentation

 

Opening-Welcome and Lesson Introduction:
Greet the children and introduce yourself.

 

Open with a prayer.

 

Dig-Main Content and Reflection:

Lesson:

  1. Show the pictures of the tabernacle and read the facts from the back.
  2. Pass out the script and assign parts.
  3. Have the children highlight their parts. Choose some children who do not have parts to be help with props.
  4. Read through the script together using the props.
  5. Application: Read the “Worship Now & Then” flipbook to the children.
  6. Pass out the invitations for their families to see the performance on Wednesday night.


Setting: Stage is set up (from stage left—the actor’s right when onstage facing the audience—to right): the bronze altar, the basin, a curtain leading to the Holy Place, the table for the Bread of the Presence, golden lamp stand, altar of incense, curtain leading to the Most Holy Place, Ark of the Covenant

Plot: Tennessee Jones is out to find the Lost Tabernacle

Characters: Tennessee Jones (T.J.)
Scripture Reader 1 – Bronze altar
Scripture Reader 2 – Bronze basin
Scripture Reader 3 – Table for the Bread of Presence
Scripture Reader 4 – Golden Lamp stand
Scripture Reader 5 – Altar of incense
Scripture Reader 6 – Curtain
Scripture Reader 7 – Ark of the Covenant

Props/Costumes:
• Bronze altar
• Basin
• Table
• Lamp stand
• Altar of incense
• 2 Curtains of red, purple, and blue
• Ark of the Covenant
• Brown hat
• Bible

Tennessee Jones (T.J.) enters stage right (near the bronze altar and basin) wearing his hat and holding his notebook.

T.J.: I think I’ve found it! The lost tabernacle! Me—Tennessee Jones—the Great Explorer! I’ve been searching for years to find the place where the Israelites worshipped the Lord in the wilderness! (He looks down at his Bible.) It says here in my Bible in Exodus 25:8, 9: “God said, ‘Have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.’”

(T.J. approaches the bronze altar.)

T.J.: This must be the Bronze Altar.

(T.J. looks through his Bible and pretends to read along while the scripture is read. Scripture Reader #1 stands up from behind the altar to read.)

Scripture Reader #1: Exodus 27:1-3 "Build an altar of acacia wood, three cubits high; it is to be square, five cubits long and five cubits wide. Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar are of one piece, and overlay the altar with bronze. Make all its utensils of bronze.

(T.J. approaches the bronze basin.)

T.J.: And this must be the Bronze Basin.

(T.J. looks through his Bible and pretends to read along while the scripture is read. Scripture Reader #2 stands up from behind the basin to read.)

Scripture Reader #2: Exodus 30:18 "Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it.”

(T.J. approaches the entrance to the curtain leading to the Holy Place.)

T.J.: Here is the Holy Place. Only the priests could enter beyond this curtain.

(T.J. moves the curtain to enter the Holy Place.)

T.J.: There are supposed to be three important items in this area.
(He speaks as he flips pages in his Bible—looking for the following scriptures.)

(Scripture Readers #3, 4, and 5 stand next to their tabernacle items as they take turns reading their verses.)

T.J.: There’s the Table for the Bread of Presence…

Scripture Reader #3: Exodus 25:23-30- “Make a table of acacia wood—two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. And make its plates and dishes of pure gold, as well as its pitchers and bowls for the pouring out of offerings. Put the bread of the Presence on this table to be before me at all times.”

T.J.: The Golden Lamp Stand…

Scripture Reader #4: Exodus 25:31 "Make a lamp stand of pure gold and hammer it out, base and shaft.”

T.J.: And the Altar of Incense…

Scripture Reader #5: Exodus 30:1-6 "Make an altar of acacia wood for burning incense. It is to be square, a cubit long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high—its horns of one piece with it. Overlay the top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it. Put the altar in front of the curtain that is before the ark of the Testimony—before the atonement cover that is over the Testimony—where I will meet with you.”

(T.J. approaches the curtain leading to the Most Holy Place.)

T.J.: Now I am entering the Most Holy Place. I don’t think I’ll go in. Who was the only one who could go in? (T.J. flips through his Bible.) Oh, only the high priest on certain occasions.

(Scripture Reader #6 stands by the curtain as he reads.)

Scripture Reader #6: Exodus 26:33 “Hang the curtain from the clasps. The curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.”

T.J.: What was in the Most Holy Place? (T.J. strains to see past the curtain.)

Scripture Reader #7: Exodus 25:10-22 "Have them make a chest of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold, both inside and out, and make a gold molding around it. Then put in the ark the Testimony, which I will give you. And make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. Place the cover on top of the ark and put in the ark the Testimony, which I will give you. There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the Testimony, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites.”

T.J.: The Most Holy Place reminds me that now we can meet with God anytime we want. Thankfully, Jesus is our great High Priest. Like Hebrews 4:14 says: “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.”

The above script might force the kids' noses into a script, whereas, rewriting it as a Newsroom script might be more interactive and fun for the kids.

Example:

"We now take you to the Tabernacle where Ace Reporter Joshua is interviewing the Lampstand"

Thank you Moses. I'm now standing with the lampstand. Lampstand, tell us what you are, and what your job is here?

Lampstand speaks --using scripture, and wrapped in gold cloth holding lit candles.



Joshua: Now I understand that JESUS told us to put our Light on a Lampstand. what was THAT all about?

Lampstand answers...

Joshua: Back to Moses in the Newsroom.

Moses: Thank you Joshua. We now go to Miriam who is interviewing the Bronze Altar (kids laying on their back with a large bowl of water on their belly .


Oh my gosh I could so write this as a newsroom right now.
I love the newsroom idea because it breaks up the story into small pieces and allows kids to use MICROPHONES (they love that) and note cards, and has cameramen who videotape the whole thing. It give plenty "to do" and gets kids noses out of scripts.

One huge advantage of the newsroom approach is that the TEACHERS can become the reporters, and thus, move the story along, ask questions, and help students answer into the microphone by rephrasing questions based on how well they answer....("so I understand your job is to lift up light, are we talking about real light or spiritual light Mr. Lampstand? ...And how would a person today become a lampstand in a church for example?")
