I have an interesting book called "Consider the Lilliess" - Plants of the Bible, by John & Kathering Paterson.

They "explore the symbolic significance of the flowers, fruits and plants mentioned in various stories and passages in the Bible." (according to the book jacket). It is interesting, and I have used it some.

All the best!

If you don't know any farmers, call your local 4-H club, agricultural extension agent (look in govt pages of phone book for extension service or 4-H & Youth), or college of agriculture.

btw...4-H kids love to show thier animals, and they get credit in their portfolios for "teaching" other kids.

The North Carolina Council of Churches has a new curriculum available for free download on their website about farmworkers. While it is geared toward adults and high school, some of the background information, quotes, statistics, and the chapter on children might be helpful.

Moderator removed note about a Farm Themed VBS that is no longer available.

...a mission to give seeds to needy families in the 3rd world, and teach them how to plant/harvest, so they can grow their own food.

As of 2012, they have a BIBLE GARDEN SCHOOL VBS, and will be adding more children's curriculum.

(Hope Seeds is run by some Lutherans and a Presbyterian)

I just found a great book for a GARDENING workshop.

"Planting A Bible Garden," by F. Nigel Hepper, is published by Revell. [ISBN: 0-8007-1756-2]

The book is loaded with pictures and descriptions, Bible references, resources, climate quidelines for specific plants, etc. This out of print book, and others like it can be ordered via

Try an on-line search for "Bible Plants" or "Bible Garden Plants" for ideas.

What does the Bible say about "Planting" your Spiritual Garden?

[Note: If these links go dead or change, please report them. You can also use the words above to do google searches.]

A few verses....

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.  John 15:5

They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory!
Isaiah 61:3b

"Blessed is the one who trusts in The Lord, whose trust is The Lord. They are like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit." (Jeremiah 17:7-8 RSV)
