The "topical lessons and ideas" forum you are in includes resources for teaching about Peace, Justice, Prayer, Redemption, Women in the Bible, and some teaching resources related to holidays, such as Mother's Day.  This forum is something of a "catch-all" for Sunday School ideas and lessons that don't neatly fit into our Bible story-specific forums but are often taught in Sunday School.

If you already have a specific Bible story in mind, look it up in our Bible story forums. Members are welcome to share their ideas and reactions by "reply" in these topics. Questions should be posted in the Teachers Lounge where they are more likely to be seen.

Hymn Stories Rotation

Here's a unique Rotation where four popular traditional hymns are taught in four different workshops.

Go Tell It On The Mountain

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

Now Thank We All Our God

Note to our Teachers: As Shepherd of your class, you make a big difference in reaching them for Jesus. You are not just communicating your love for them; you are an extension of His love. May God bless you and your teaching for the coming weeks.

"If you are planting for a year, plant grain; if you are planting for a decade, plant trees; if you are planting for a century, plant people." - Old Chinese proverb

Workshop

Go Tell It On The Mountain

Rotation Theme Verse:

I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.
Psalm 13:6

Rotation & Lesson Goals:

Inviting the children to hear the message of faith behind the words we often sing.

Lesson Plan

Opening:

Welcome children and introduce yourself.

Take attendance (sheet is in Class folder)

Ask the children if they remember the Bible verse we are learning. (above) They get a reward if they get it correct (or close).

Dig:

FIRST WEEK ONLY! (11/5/00)

“What is this?” (Hold up hymnal) Let them answer.

“Did you ever think about how a book like this gets started? Each of the hymns in this book is a story because each hymn was written by a person trying to tell his or her story of faith. Over the years these hymns became part of our church’s story. Maybe you have a favorite hymn or song that you like to sing and that way hymns become our stories of faith, too. What we are going to do together is to begin to look at some of the most popular hymns we sing, maybe learn some new ones, and find out the story behind the hymn.”

OTHER WEEKS (11/12-12/3/00)

Give class handout about song.

Explain to the class about the song you will be learning about and the activity that will be done.

Explain the “Background Information” about the song and the theme.

Have a student (or read for younger classes) read aloud the “Scripture Reference”.

Isaiah 42:11-12

ISA 42:11 Let the desert and its towns raise their voices;
let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice.
Let the people of Sela sing for joy;
let them shout from the mountaintops.

ISA 42:12 Let them give glory to the LORD
and proclaim his praise in the islands.

Cookie Walk

Every year in early December, we sponsor a Holiday Cookie Walk. Women from the church each donate four to five dozen homemade holiday cookies.
After a Wednesday evening church service, we put the homemade cookies out on long tables. Church members and guests purchase empty containers and walk around the tables filling their containers with the cookies of their choice. Everyone leaves with home-baked holiday cookies, and our children’s ministry makes several hundred dollars. Our only expense is the empty containers. This is an easy and fun fund-raiser for everyone.
