Trinity, God, Grace, "Church," "Worship," Salvation, Holy Spirit, etc etc. The following topics often began when someone asked for or came up with a lesson resource "about Grace" for example, or had a good idea for teaching "about the Church." Some of these discussion threads began as a question in our Teachers Lounge and were later moved and expanded here.

If you are looking for a subject that is typically associated with a BIBLE VERSE OR STORY, we suggest that you look up that Bible story in our Bible Story Lessons Forums.  For example, there is some "baptism" material posted here in this "Church Words & Theological Subjects" forum, but the Bible story forum about Jesus' Baptism has many more resources on that subject.

If you need help finding or coming up with a lesson resource, post your question in the Teachers Lounge.

3 Stories from Acts about Baptism and Believing

Here's a bright idea for teaching Baptism & Believing that's quite different than the usual approach to teaching Baptism (which is to talk about Jesus' baptism).

Teach a six week unit about Baptism -which doesn't refer to Jesus' baptism, using the following 3 short stories from the Book of Acts:

  1. Peter baptizes Cornelius,
  2. Paul baptizes Lydia/household,
  3. Paul baptizes jailer/prisoners.

We did all three in sequence and it was really nice. We were able to get into the idea of ANYONE, even outsiders and unbelievers turned on to God. We were able to discuss WHAT it was that Paul asked them to believe. And we were able to discuss HOW these people were prepared/unprepared and attracted to becoming a believer. <>< Neil

Abingdon (UMC) press has a six week curriculum called "Touch the Water, Taste the Bread."  Now available to order as a download (note: download version does not include PowerPoint that was included on the CD-Rom version.)

It's a preschool/kindergarten unit that could be done in a rotational type setting on the sacraments. Covering both topics could take 3-6 weeks depending on what parts you use and how you cover the material.

I've also used it with children up to grade 2 in a "Mini-retreat" format where we covered it all in 2 afternoon sessions of about 2 hours each.

You can find many more lessons and ideas about the Baptism of Jesus/John the Baptist lessons, including...

There are Noah workshops that look at that story's parallels to baptism.
