Lessons and ideas for teaching on Jeremiah

This topic thread is for posting general lessons, ideas and resources for teaching about Jeremiah.  If you have a complete set, start a new topic.

Jeremiah isn't often taught by Rotation Sunday Schools. This is because we tend to "have to" focus on the "major" stories of the Bible for children. Teaching each for 4 to 5 weeks in a row over a 4 or 5 year period often means we don't have time to cover "non-Major" stories or persons. What is considered "major" is left to the individual church.

We did a Jeremiah rotation for our Wednesday night program, not for our Sunday School. Some of my lessons are posted in the other thread associated with this topic.

About half of our lessons were about Jeremiah in particular. The other half are about prophets in general, and what it means to be "prophetic" in our day. We pulled in extra information from our church's justice and witness ministries.

Art idea for Jeremiah

I just saw a video effect that reminded me of a very effective art project --embossing on "brass" or "copper" sheets. These thin sheets are available in art catalogs/stores.

You lay them on a piece of felt and use wooden stick to press a pattern and words into the sheet. The words must be pressed/spelled right to left to appear correct when the brass is turned over (the side you want to show after all is said and done).

Older students can write on the back side of the sheet (right to left) and emboss everything EXCEPT the letters ...for a very interesting effect when flipped over.

God wants to "IMPRESS" the Law on our heart.
What is that Law? - Love God, Love Neighbor.
That would be the thing to write. They could illustrate those too. (hearts)

Use hole punch to punch holes around border. Spiral thread yarn around-through holes to make colorful edge. Leave extra yarn for hanging.

Video IdeaC501193V

I found a cartoon video from the Vision Video Collection Great Bible Stories - Children's Heroes of the Bible - The Old Testament, includes the The Story of Jeremiah.

You can preview on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?...KLujhq3Z&index=5.

These are older animated videos created back in the 1980's.

Not bad, and it tells the story in 23 mins.

Jeremiah 8:18-9:1

Science (or Games) Workshop

Message: God is Big Enough for ALL the Hurt

Activity: Children will build waterways to transport water from “point A” to the ground (a bush or new plant, perhaps).

Materials:

  • Gutters
  • Wooden blocks
  • Buckets; cups
  • Other random building accessories
  • Water
  • Paper
  • Pencils

* In case of bad weather, extra buckets and orbeez (water beads) will be provided for inside play.

Set Up:
- Divide materials in two groups
- Have water in buckets/watering cans

Lesson:

  1. Children sit in circle in Bowling Alley with CREATE children to hear Bible Story (see below)
  2. Take MOVE children outside; Divide into 2 groups
  3. Tell them they need to get the water from the bucket to the plant using the materials they have
  4. Give them about 10 min to create and experiment
  5. Have each group “Show and Tell”
  6. Ask: (ideas of possible answers – no answers are right or wrong!)
    - What did you do (literally)? (built water chutes; put gutters together to make water slides…)
    - How did it go? (we worked well together; “so and so” wouldn’t listen to our ideas, and that made it hard to work together; we tried x, y, z things before we found what worked…)
    - I wonder what this has to do with the Bible Story? (it was like a fountain of tears flowing to God; the ground is like God and can absorb all of our tears and prayers…)
    - I wonder what that has to do with life? (God cares about us and wants to know what is upsetting to us; God is there for us when we are sad and angry and hurting; God is big enough to hold all our pain and everyone else’s; We can share our pain with God through prayer…)
  7. If time, have them write a prayer on a small piece of paper and send it down the water chute.

Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

18 God, I am very sad and afraid.
19 Listen to my people.
Everywhere in this country, people are crying for help.
They say, “Is the Lord still at Zion?
Is Zion’s King still there?”
But God says,
“The people of Judah worshiped their worthless foreign idols.
That made me very angry!
Why did they do that?”
20 And the people say,
“Harvest time is over.
Summer is gone,
and still we have not been saved.”
21 My people are hurt, so I am hurt.
I am too sad to speak.
22 Surely there is some medicine in Gilead.
Surely there is a doctor in Gilead.
So why are the wounds of my people not healed?
9 If my head were filled with water,
and if my eyes were a fountain of tears,
I would cry day and night for my people who have been destroyed.

1 Timothy 2:1-3 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
God Wants Us to Pray for Everyone
2 First of all, I ask that you pray for all people. Ask God to bless them and give them what they need. And give thanks. 2 You should pray for rulers and for all who have authority. Pray for these leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of devotion to God and respect for him. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior.

Jeremiah 18:4

And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.

The Potter: video short on Vimeo,
3 minutes long.

For an activity that demonstrates how we return to mush if we don't keep letting the "potter" form us see the "Oobleck" description in the Jacob and Esau "Science" Ideas.

DVD - “Jeremiah” (New Superbook Series)

When Chris encounters bullies stealing money from a blind man, he is too afraid to stand up to them. Superbook whisks the kids away to Jerusalem 600 B.C.. They meet the great prophet, Jeremiah, who faces humiliation, degradation, and possible death for speaking God's message of repentance and judgment. The kids are whisked home and Chris gathers the strength, from Jeremiah's example, to stand up to the bullies as Jeremiah did in his day.

Lesson: In the face of all odds, stand up for what God tells you is the right thing to do, no matter what. (Animated - approx. 28 mins)
