Here are Three Weeks of simple Kindergarten-age activities we used to help them understand Jesus' Second Coming and the New Jerusalem.

Week One

STORY: A Dream of Heaven (Jesus Storybook Bible pg. 342)

Supplies

  • "The Jesus Storybook Bible", by Sally Lloyd-Jones, Zonderkidz, 9780310708254.

Questions:

  1. Where did the Very Religious Leaders put John to stop him from telling people about Jesus? In a prison cell on the island of Patmos.
  2. What did John see in the dream Jesus gave him? People bowing to a king on a throne, the holy city of Jerusalem with streets of gold, gates made out of pearl, and a crystal-like river.
  3. Why did Jesus want John to know the secret about the future? So that people could stay strong in their faith and wait with much excitement for the day Jesus will return.
  4. Why does God want to start over and make everything new? Because then the world will be without sin and we can be close to God once again.
  5. Why didn’t John write “The End” at the end of the Bible? Because the story isn’t over. Jesus will return to take us to heaven very soon.

Activity #1: CRAFT - Story Pictures

Supplies:

  • storyboards
  • pencils
  • crayons
  • colored pencils

Instructions:
Each kid will receive a storyboard with six panels to draw pictures from the story. Each panel is labeled with a picture for them to draw:

  • Jesus, the King, sitting on a throne.
  • People bowing down to Jesus (on the throne).
  • People giving their treasures to Jesus.
  • People cheering and clapping; singing a new song.
  • Satan thrown into a lake of fire.
  • A sparkling city coming down from heaven.

Activity #2:  GAME - The Jewels of Heaven

Supplies:

  • poster board picture of heaven
  • jewels (need to be peel & stick)
  • blindfold

Game Instructions:

  1. Much like the game, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, kids will take turns pinning the jewels on the walls of heaven while they are blindfolded.
  2. The walls of heaven will be drawn on a piece of poster board which will be hung up in the classroom.
  3. Blindfold the children, spin them around, and let them try to stick the jewels onto the walls of heaven.

Week Two

STORY: Jesus is Coming Again (The Story for Children pg. 282)

Questions:

  • Why did Jesus give John visions of heaven? To share with churches so that they would stay strong and true in their faith in Jesus.
  • What did John see in the dream Jesus gave him? The holy city of Jerusalem with streets of gold, gates made out of pearl, and a crystal-like river; the great tree of life from the Garden of Eden will grow in the middle of the city.
  • What will not exist in heaven? What will we not have in heaven? No more tears, no more death, no more crying, no more pain.
  • Why does God want to start over and make everything new? Because then the world will be without sin and we can be close to God once again.

Activity #1: How Do I Get Into Heaven Knock Knock

Supplies:

  • extra adult
  • room with a door
  • blank cards or pre-cut cardstock

Preparation:

  • write up 16 cards (see list below)

16 Cards to read: I read my Bible; I go to church; I am a nice person; I give away my stuff to people who need it more; I do my best in school to get good grades; I pray everyday; I have Christian parents; I make good choices; I treat other people with kindness; I don’t say bad words; I help my mom with chores around the house; I bring a quarter to church every Sunday; I have been baptized; I memorize Bible verses; I follow the 10 Commandments; I obey my parents; I don’t hit my brothers or sisters.

Instructions:

  1. Kids will be given a card (from the 16).
  2. Have kids knock on the classroom door from the inside.
  3. An adult will open it from the outside and ask, “Why should you get into heaven?”
  4. The child will answer using what’s written on their card.
  5. If the kids given the correct response, “I believe in Jesus,” they can pass through the door; if they give a different response, the adult will say, “I’m sorry, that’s not how you get into heaven.”  This time around none of the children will have the correct answer.
  6. Once all of the kids have had a turn at giving their responses, explain that all of their responses were good things that we should do while we’re on Earth, but none of those will get us into heaven. The only thing that can get us into heaven is believing in Jesus Christ.
  7. This time, have kids line up at the door again, knock, and when asked, “Why should you get into heaven?” they will respond with, “Because I believe in Jesus.” Then they can pass through the door to the other side.

Activity #2: Building the New City of Jerusalem

Supplies:

  • wooden blocks - assorted shapes
  • gold coloured - paper or fun foam
  • blue coloured - paper of fun foam
  • anything else you can think of to help the kids build their New Jerusalem

Directions:

  1. Kids will build the new city of Jerusalem based on what they remember from the story:
  • the new city will have streets of gold,
  • gates of pearl,
  • a crystal-like river,
  • a tree in the middle,
  • and 12 gates that are open.

Depending on the number of kids, you could have them all work together on this project, or have one group at each table working on their project.

  • Why did Jesus want John to know the secret about the future? So that people could stay strong in their faith and wait with much excitement for the day Jesus will return.
  • Why does God want to start over and make everything new? Because then the world will be without sin and we can be close to God once again.
  • Why didn’t John write “The End” at the end of the Bible? Because the story isn’t over. Jesus will return to take us to heaven very soon.

Some art and activities that worked well with our PS/K group as we spent a few weeks talking about Revelation:

Knocking and sharing: a meal relay to go with the letters to seven churches

supplies:

  • toy food
  • toy plates
  • chair and crown

Explain that we are going to play a game that goes with this Scripture passage after we read it. Jesus said to the Church in Laodicea:

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne." Rev 3:20-21

Divide the group into two teams and have them line up. First person should pick up a plate with a couple pieces of toy food on it  and carry it to the door (or a wall) and knock, then go back to sit in a chair (throne). Next person puts the crown on the first and then carries the plate, knocks, and returns to throne. When the last person returns with the plate, the first person puts the crown on him and the relay is done.

Say: Just like we knocked and shared a meal, Jesus promised to eat with those who let Him in and then share his throne with Him. Jesus wants to be with the church. In today’s story, Jesus sent messages to seven churches to warn the churches because Jesus loves the church! Jesus knows that trusting in Him and following Him is the best choice for everyone. How can we start living like we hear Jesus' voice now? What does it mean to open the door to him?

Make church art

supplies:

  • construction paper
  • envelopes
  • jumbo craft sticks
  • markers
  • glue

Give each preschooler a sheet of paper and an envelope. Show a preschooler how to glue her open envelope to her paper. Glue the flap to the paper as well so the pocket is left open. Encourage her to use markers to draw a door on the envelope and a cross above the flap to form a church. Then give her some jumbo craft sticks and invite her to use markers to decorate each one to look like a person. The preschooler may then place her craft stick people in the pocket of the envelope as if they are people at church. Write “Jesus loves the church” and the memory verse on each preschooler’s artwork.

Say: Jesus loves the church. Jesus sent messages to seven churches. He warned them to turn away from their sin and follow Him. Jesus works through the church to help believers work together to do God’s plan. Who are the people in your church?

Toss crowns

supplies:

  • plastic toss rings
  • picture of feet
  • masking tape

Draw two feet on paper or find a picture online. Hang the feet on the wall, touching the floor. Use tape to make a line on the floor several feet away from the feet. Tell preschoolers that the rings are crowns and the feet represent Jesus’ feet. Allow preschoolers to take turns tossing the “crowns” at “Jesus’ feet.”

Say:  In our story today we will be talking about John’s vision again. John cried when he saw that no one was good enough to open a scroll. Then John saw Jesus, the Lamb of God. When Jesus took the scroll, the elders threw their crowns at His feet. I wonder why? (pause for answers)  I wonder if you would throw something at his feet?

Jesus died on the cross so that we can have forgiveness and life forever with God. Jesus is good enough to open the scroll. He deserves all of our worship. One day, everyone and everything will worship Jesus.

Seal a scroll

supplies:

  • "parchment" printer paper
  • crayons
  • jewel stickers
  • big stickers for sealing

Give a piece of parchment paper to each child. Have the children to decorate their papers with drawings of crowns and jewel stickers. Write the memory verse on each child’s paper, and then guide him to roll up his paper like a scroll. Give him a large sticker to seal his scroll.

Say: John cried when he saw that no one was good enough to open the scroll. Then he saw Jesus! Jesus is good enough to open the scroll. Jesus is worthy of our worship. One day, everyone and everything will worship Jesus!

Picture a new city

supplies

  • construction paper
  • scissors or paper cutter
  • gold paper or ribbon
  • glue sticks

Before the session, cut out small rectangles and  squares from construction paper.  Give each preschooler a sheet of construction paper. Set out the rectangles and squares. Show a preschooler how to glue rectangles and squares on their paper to serve as buildings, "stacking" them like blocks to make tall buildings. Glue gold paper or ribbon between the buildings for the roads. Write the memory verse on the paper.

Say: What a beautiful city you built! Who do you think lives there? What might they be doing? In John’s vision, John saw the city of Jerusalem coming down from heaven. Jesus said that He is coming back soon. When Jesus comes back, everyone who trusts in Him will be with Him in that city forever. God will undo every bad thing—no more death, pain, or tears! Jesus will come back and make all things new, just like our memory verse says.

Build a new city

supplies

  • blocks
  • decorative gem vase fillers

Encourage preschoolers to work together to build a city with blocks. Provide decorative gem vase fillers for children to use as roads between the buildings they build.

Say: The city streets in the new Jerusalem will be made of pure gold, as clear as glass. Jesus will come back and make all things new. Everyone who trusts in Him will be with Him forever in this new city. What do you think it might be like to live here?
