Sodom and Gomorrah
Newsroom Workshop- Lot's Story
Summary of Lesson Activities:
A newsroom skit.
Genesis 18:16-19:26. (This is too much for the children to read, so much of it can be paraphrased.)
God took Abram outside and said, "'Look up at the heavens and count the stars – if indeed you can count them.' Then He said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.' Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness." Genesis 15:5-6 (NLT)
The children will cover the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, (with discretion).
- know that God is merciful
- know that God is just
- know that God does listen to our pleas
Teacher preparation in advance:
- read the scripture passages and lesson plan.
- learn the memory verse.
- check out the room before your first Sunday workshop so that you know where everything is located.
- preview the cameras and know how to operate them.

Greet the children and introduce yourself as well as any new child.
Open with prayer
Explain the purpose of this workshop: "Today you will enact the news coverage of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah found in Genesis 18:16-19:26. This is a lot of reading, so we might paraphrase some it!"
Read the scripture: Genesis 18:16-19:26. (Encourage the children to use their Bibles to look up the passages.
(This script is only a suggestion, you may prefer to have the children write one of their own!)
Characters: director, anchor 1, anchor 2, correspondent, eye witness
ANCHOR 1: Welcome to FUMC TV News. I'm Moab Light.
ANCHOR 2: I'm Ben-Ammi Morton.
ANCHOR 1: And we are here to share with you more of the Good News.
ANCHOR 2: Our top story today is the mysterious disappearance of the entire city of Sodom and Gomorrah!
ANCHOR 1: (quite shaken and responding to Ben) Wow, the entire city?! I had relatives there, you know. (speaking into camera) This doesn't sound like Good News to me.
ANCHOR 2: (speaking to Moab) Me neither, Mo. I just don't know what to make of it!
ANCHOR 1: (wiping tear from eye) Let's go now, live, to the scene with special reporter Gene E. Sis. (pause) Gene, can you hear me?
CORRESPONDENT: (hand pressed to ear piece) Yes, Mo. I can hear you.
ANCHOR 1: Gene, can you give us an update on the current situation of Sodom and Gomorrah? Are you in any immediate danger?
CORRESPONDENT: Well, Mo, I'm standing here at the edge of Zoar, a safe distance from the non-existent city previously known as S & G. Sodom and Gomorrah was well known for its "hospitality" to strangers. Yes, this was the party capital of the world. No matter what your pleasure, you could find it at S & G. However satisfying that may sound, there were those who considered this place and its pleasures to be sinful. It seems as though S & G had a different set of morals and standards than some.
ANCHOR 1 : So, Gene, what do the fine folks of Zoar think about the devastation of S & G?
CORRESPONDENT: Well, guys, most of the Zoarians seem to be a little shaken by the whole thing. There seems to be a lot of finger pointing going on about what they consider to be the sinful and evil nature of S & G. I have noticed that most of the people here have on torn clothes and ashes…whatever that is about. However, they do tell me we have an eye witness who is willing to share his version of the story. (pause) Yes, here he comes now.
(Lot is carrying a salt block and walks up to Gene)
CORRESPONDENT: (speaking to Lot) Shalom! Are you Lot, nephew of Abraham, former citizen of S & G?
LOT: (coughing a little and brushes dust off clothes) Yes, that is I.
ANCHOR 1: (speaking to Ben) What kind of grammar is that?
ANCHOR 2: (speaking to Mo) I'm not sure, he must not be a native S & G-ian.
CORRESPONDENT: Thank you for joining us. Would you like to share with us your version of this destruction?
LOT: Well to understand what has happened here today, I will need to tell you about things in the past and bring them up to date.
ANCHOR 1: (speaking to anchor 2) Oh, boy. This could take a while. Do you want to set off some fireworks or something?
ANCHOR 2: (speaking to anchor 1) I think I would like to see a little fire in the sky! (pause) I'm craving something salty…
LOT: As I was saying, several years ago my Uncle Abraham told me to choose the region I desired for grazing my many herds and he would take the opposite area for his. True to my nature, I chose the easy region; plenty of water, nice terrain, close to civilization, etc. Looking back, I see this was my first big mistake. After living in this region for some time, my family and I began to grow lax in our morals and we began to adopt the S & G ways of life.
CORRESPONDENT: (yawns and rolls eyes) Please, Mr. Lot, speed things up a bit!
LOT: Yes, of course. (clears throat) One day when Uncle Abe was at the tree of Mamre, he had three visitors, Holy visitors. Among some of things they said to Uncle Abe, was the Lord's intention to destroy S & G. Good Ole' Uncle Abe stayed with the Lord while the other two visitors came to me. Uncle Abe pleaded with God…several times. The result, My family and my self would be spared. That's when the two angels arrived at the city gates. I begged them not to spend the night in the streets, it isn't safe. They reluctantly agreed; but it was too late.
CORRESPONDENT: How was it too late?
LOT: Other S & G-ians had seen them. The men came banging on my door demanding their turn to entertain the two visitors. I tried to bribe them, you know, 'throw them a bone' so they would leave us alone; but my plan didn't work. so, I continued to prepare their meal. (I never did figure out where my wife was and why she couldn't prepare their food!) And that's when it happened.
CORRESPONDENT: (interested) What happened? The destruction?
LOT: Umm, no. That's when the two Holy visitors opened the door and blinded all of the men with a great light. It was weird; I've never seen anything like that before.
CORRESPONDENT: (sarcastically) I guess not if you were blind…
LOT: Not me, I wasn't blinded! Then, the visitors told me to take my family and leave without looking back. I tried. I hesitated. They grabbed my arm and practically dragged me at times. I pleaded to stop here at Zoar because I just didn't think I could make it to the mountains. And that's when it happened.
CORRESPONDENT: (anxiously) What happened? The destruction?
LOT: No, this. (holds up salt block for everyone to see) My wife. She looked back. She just couldn't leave her old ways behind to follow God, so this is what happened: She was turned into a pillar of salt.
LOT: And that's when it happened.
CORRESPONDENT: (anxiously) What happened? The destruction?
LOT: No, the sun rose over the land. And that's when it
CORRESPONDENT: (sarcastically) What happened? Daylight?
LOT: No, the destruction. God rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah – from the Lord out of the heavens. Everything including the vegetation was destroyed. My two daughters and I are the only survivors of S & G; and that's because we left there and never looked back.
CORRESPONDENT: Wow, again. That's quite a story, Mr. Lot, nephew of Abraham. But now I am having a strong urge to tear my garments and cover myself with ashes! I need to repent and ask for forgiveness! (Drops news gear and runs off)
ANCHOR 2: (nervously) Well, Gene, thanks for that report.
ANCHOR 1: Hmm. Seems things are going to be different around here once all of that smoke clears! This concludes our news broadcast for today. I'm Moab Light.
ANCHOR 2: And I'm Ben-Ammi Morton with FUMC TV News signing off.
ANCHOR 1: Thanks for dropping by.
End of script
Ask the children the following:
- Did God know there wouldn't be 10 righteous people in Sodom & Gomorrah?
- Do you think Abraham believed God knew?
- Why do you think Abraham tried to bargain with God?
- Why do you think God let him?
- What is significant about Lot's wife looking back?
- Do you think God would have spared Lot and his family if Abraham hadn't pleaded for him?
Close with prayer
Tidy and Dismissal: Ask children to help tidy the room. Give any specific instructions for clearing the workshop room.
