Recap of our "We're beginning to think a lot about Christmas" Zoom Coffee Chat

Thank you to the Christian educators who took the time to gather on Zoom for an hour of prayer, brainstorming, and encouragement as we shared our challenges and ideas regarding planning for Advent and Christmas while considering the complications of a continuing pandemic. While the situation is different in each community, we found that we had much in common.

I know some people were unable to attend, and I also know that those who were there wanted a summary of all that we talked about on Tuesday. So here it is. (I have also attached a more detailed transcript of our discussion.)

Here are the main highlights and topics of discussion:

  • We took a tour of's Jesus' Birth forum to familiarize the group with the Advent and Christmas lessons and ideas and help available at this site. Be sure to take a look at the attached meeting summary for direct links to the resources we highlighted.
  • We polled the group and found that plans for this year are trending toward "cautious programming," allowing for social distancing or doing things outside.
  • We held three "breakout groups" that gathered for discussion and idea-sharing. Their highlights and specifics are posted in the transcript.

    Breakout groups:

    • Advent programming, including devotions for at-home use and worship
    • Christmas story lessons for Sunday school
    • Christmas programs, pageants, and musicals

  • Participants felt there were helpful comments from and for churches of all sizes, and that most of the ideas could be adapted by smaller churches.
  • Ellen Allston of Shadyside Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, PA shared a link to a "Where are the Kids?", which provides an answer to share when people ask about pandemic-related attendance.

I encourage all of you to continue to share your ideas by posting at—especially this year when so many churches need ideas and inspiration. And don't forget the great resource we offer in the Teachers Lounge: 24/7 help with your programming questions and problems.

Blessings on your ministry,

Amy Crane Board President
