Sistine Chapel

We would like to do a lesson on the Sistine Chapel (the theme is Images of Jesus). We are using Cornerstone's lesson plan but would like to modify it to emphasis something other than the Day of Judgment. We'd also like to have the kids paint while lying on their backs. Please tell me if you know of other Sistine Chapel lesson options, or if you have any tips for the painting activity. Thanks.

Painting the Sistine Chapel

If you have tables that you can adjust the hight on, you can set them at their lowest and tape paper to the underside. The kids can lie on their backs on the floor and paint or color the "ceiling" above them.

Wow, you not only have a creative mind, but COURAGE! I have a mental image of children with paint running down their arms onto their clothes, the floor, etc. I would probably use the table idea, but go for crayons or markers since they won't drip.

Another possibility if you have drop ceilings in your classroom is to allow the kids to paint those panels. (you can cut paper to fit and then just insert into the panels if you want them to not be permanent). The art class at my kids' elementary school did this about 8 years ago, and they are still up and look wonderful!

I'm not sure you'd want to do this lying on their backs! Maybe as a summer VBS project , camp or mid-week activity!

Here's a fun idea for your "on their back painting" ... use Cool Whip and paintbrushes! It shouldn't drip -- if it does, it's edible! Put a drop or two of food coloring in to make different colors. big grin

Actually, we tied this in with creation because the paintng on the ceiling is of creation. Our children wore goggles, big white shirts and yes... we did use paint! It was amazing because the little ones (preK - 2nd) had less paint on them the older kids! This was a huge hit and alot of fun!

Creation Story
Art Workshop

Summary of Lesson Activities:

The children will hear/experience the Creation story by being creators. They will look at the work of Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and will experiment with painting while lying on their backs and by painting frescoes. They will consider what it means to be created in God’s image and how they can use their creativity to bring glory to God.
