Presentation

Opening-Welcome and Lesson Introduction:
Open with prayer: “Good morning, Lord. As we begin a new day together bring us closer to each other and closer to You. Amen.”

Pose the following question to the group: “What can you do in five minutes?”
Is it a lot of time or barely any time at all?

The idea is to get the class to see it from both sides. Five minutes are often wasted – thought of as nothing and that’s often valid. Five minutes can also make a huge difference. When? (When you’re late, when you’re taking a tough test, when they’re your last 5 minutes. . .)

Dig-Main Content and Reflection:

Give each student one or more of the slips of paper containing advertisements for things that can be done in five minutes. (Listed at the end of this lesson.) Tell them that these all came from a simple Internet search on “five minutes.” They range from fairly reasonable to ridiculous.

Have the kids share the advertisement listed on their paper(s) with the group, briefly discussing the merits of each claim. This doesn’t have to take too much time, but hopefully will assist in getting them to think about various uses of time as well as the value our society places on time itself.

Turn to the Bible and the verses to be highlighted today. Choose two volunteers to find and read (one each) the verses to the group. The first (Psalm 118:24) is probably very familiar to them. (Is it so familiar that it’s lost its meaning?)

Discuss the concept of “God’s time” especially as it relates to His gift of life to each of us. How do we spend God’s time?

Have the class listen to the song, “Next 5 Minutes” – track #5 on Steven Curtis Chapman’s Speechless CD. (Use your own discretion about when you want to hand out the lyric sheets. My suggestion is to have them listen to the song several times and to try to catch the words – you can help them where they need it. They can then take the lyric sheet home with them to remember, but let ‘em work for the gist now.)

Discuss the song’s lyrics and the attitude they convey. Can/do they live their lives like this?

If you watched the Rachel Scott video last week, discuss Rachel’s attitude toward life and her feeling that she would not live to a very old age. How did she rejoice in each of the Lord’s days? She lived her last five minutes as a high school student and embracing the Lord. How easy/hard is that to do?

Closing:
Close with prayer: “Lord, truly you have given us this day, this moment, this next five minutes. Let us rejoice and be glad in them and all of the five minutes’es to come. Amen.”
