Moses has gone back up the mountain to get new commandments after he broke the original ones from God. While Seth’s mom is away, he gets stuck working for Jeshanah, a greedy old man who breaks these commandments in his quest for riches and then suffers the consequences..

Mr. Henry's Wild & Wacky World #6: Boo!, All About Fear, By: Frank Peretti, Thomas Nelson, 2002, YouTube -

In the "Spontaneous Re-enactment Theater" you see a performance of "Moses and the 12 spies" (22:40 - 28:00 = 5:06 mins).  It's a short silly re-enactment of the 12 spy's story.
They do not use 12 spies but gives you some good ideas for props you could use for the story like the purple balloons for grapes and the large pair of work gloves indicating giants.
Suggestion: read the scripture, then show the clip, then have the kids act out the story coming up with creative ideas themselves (have purple balloons and large work gloves on hand too!).

The "Moses" movie starring Ben Kingsley (1995)

Briefly includes the stories of "wandering" in the wilderness up to Mt Sinai, and the Mt Sinai stories.

Other video suggestions needed!

Sinai Wilderness

Video Workshop

Video -"The Ten Commandments", by Promenade Pictures, animated, 2009, 88 minutes, 796019809443. Some areas not suitable for young children - please preview & edit as needed.

Scripture Reference:

The bitter waters of Marah:  Exodus 15:22-25b
Manna and quail:  Exodus 16:1-36
Water from the rock:  Exodus 17:1-7

Note:  In September we did Baby to Burning Bush rotation.  October we did Plagues to Red Sea rotation.  Our November rotation was on the miracles in the Sinai desert and the building of the tabernacle.  So we broke this feature-length movie into three segments, shown over the three months.  This last segment we showed did include the golden calf and Moses receiving the ten commandments, but we did not delve into details as the 10 Commandments is our January rotation.

Leader Preparation:

  • Read the scripture ahead of time.
  • Gather the materials.
  • Preview the video.

Supplies List:

  • Movie
  • Popcorn

Opening- Welcome and Lesson Introduction:

Greet the children and introduce yourself.

Open with a prayer.

Dig- Main Content and Reflection:

Chapter 7 - Losing Hope (shows Pillar of Fire & Smoke, Water from a Rock, Manna, & Quail).

Chapter 10 - short segment of the building of the Tabernacle and Ark.

Note: NOTHING is mentioned about the SPIES and the end of the movie has Joshua leading his people into the promised land - so I would NOT include Chapter 11.

*Note:  God writes in Hebrew on tablets – have Hebrew bible on hand for kids to look at.  Explain this was the language God spoke in at that time.

Are we there yet?

  1. Moses led the people through the desert.
    - Through the day they followed what?  Cloud pillar or pillar of smoke
    - At night they followed? Pillar of fire
    - What was the pillar of smoke & fire?  God
  2. The people were always complaining.
    - When they complained of being thirsty what did God give them?  Water from a rock – Moses hit the rock with his staff and water poured out
    - Location on map:  Rephedim
    - rock – Rock of Horeb
    - Moses called this place Meribah which means “quarrel”
  3. When the people complained they were hungry what food did God rain down from Heaven?  Manna
    - Manna means in Hebrew “What is it?”
    - What did the manna cakes taste like?  honey
  4. When the people complained about just having manna to eat and they wanted meant what did God send to them to eat?  Quail
  5. Moses went up the mountain to speak to God.  While he was gone the people lost faith in Moses, thinking he could be dead.  The people decided to build an idol to worship, just like the Egyptians fake gods this one was made out of what and looked like what?  A bull made out of gold
  6. While on the mountain what does God give to Moses?  The Ten Commandments
  7. When Moses comes down from the mountain what does he see the people doing?  Worshiping a false god, a golden calf, they had made themselves
  8. This makes Moses and God very angry.  What had God done for them in Egypt that they had chosen to forget?  Took them out of Egypt, gave them their freedom from being slaves
  9. What miracles did God do that the complaining people had chose to also forget?  The ten plagues, parting the red sea, manna, quail, water from a rock.
  10. God loves his people and he gave them a chance to still follow him and not the false God.  Did everyone choose to follow God as Moses asked?  No, and those that did not follow God died
  11. God had given instructions to Moses to build an Ark and a tabernacle.
    - Who did Moses gives these instructions to?  Aaron
    - Who built the ark and the tabernacle?  The people
    - What is the Ark?   A golden box with two cerebrums on the lid
    - What is kept in the Ark? Ten Commandments
    - Who spoke from the Ark?  God
    - What is the tabernacle?   A tent – a place to worship God (like a church)
  12. The people still continued to complain daily so what did God decide about them seeing the promised land?  That they would wander for 40 years in the desert and that only their children and their children’s children would get to see the promised land
  13. Have you ever gone on a long trip and asked "Are we there yet?"
  14. God kept doing amazing things for his people, even though they always found something new to complain about.  What does this tell you about God and his patience towards you when you complain about your life?

While you've been complaining about small everyday things this last month and possibly blaming God for it, think about things that did go right in your life and whether or not you remembered to thank God, in gratitude, for the good things he's given you, that you didn't ask for, but he knew you needed.

Sometimes what we want and need are two different things and God knows the difference.  To see how God is at work in your life some things you can do are:

  • Family Mealtime (at the end of the day) - have everyone share their day and help each other point out where God was at work.  Remember to include gratitude in your mealtime prayers.
  • Keep a journal - your prayers/God answers, look back on your day and note wherever  you realize God was at work and you missed it.  Remember to include your thanks for the things he did do for you in your night-time prayers.

End with a prayer.

UPDATE 2015:  The Stor of Moses (Beginner's Bible Series) DVD, is being re-released - in a collection called "Beginner's Bible Vol. 1, 610583501698.  Vol. 1 includes 3 of the original videos:  Easter, Nativity, and Moses.

Update 2019: Looks like they may be taking this out of print as Beginner's Bible are now posting full episodes on YouTube, The Story of Moses can be found here .

Covers:  Baby Moses, Leaving Egypt, Marrying, Burning Bush, Plagues, Red Sea Crossing, Pillars of Smoke & Fire,  Water from a Rock, Manna, Ten Commandments (not the golden calf).
I was thinking this would be a good video for the little ones, as it reviews previous rotations on Baby Moses through to Crossing Red Sea, but then it goes into the wilderness stories.

Free video about Wilderness Wandering

Short video about how God cared for the people as they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

"The Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years on their way from Egypt to the Promised Land. They certainly didn’t pack enough for that whole time! Find out some of the ways God took care of them in Exodus 14-17."
