Lesson

Opening:

Greet the children and introduce yourself, explaining what they'll be doing today and what you hope they'll learn.

Let's begin by you telling me EVERYTHING YOU KNOW about the Last Supper.  (list answers on board)

The Story of the Six Blind Men and the Elephant

Ask: Do you think that if you were present at the Last Supper with Jesus and the Disciples, you would have remembered and understood everything that was going on, what Jesus was saying, and what it all meant?    Let's vote on that question....  How many say "I'd remember and understand a lot, some, a little."

If we're going to be honest, the answer is "probably not much," actually! Even Peter doesn't seem to understand what Jesus is really talking about.  They only began to understand AFTER Jesus was resurrected, and AFTER they had celebrated the Lord's Supper many times. But even today, not all Christians completely agree on what the full message of the Lord's Supper really is. We all see it a little bit differently.

It reminds me of another famous story... (show the cartoon or book)

elephant-blind-men

Let’s say you were all blind. If I asked you to describe what something looks like, how would you first find out for yourself? I would need to touch it.

Say: Let me tell you a story. It takes place a long time ago in a Africa.

Six blind men were discussing exactly what they believed an elephant to be, since each had heard how strange the creature was, yet no one had ever seen one before. So the blind men agreed to find an elephant and discover what the animal was really like.

It didn't take the blind men long to find an elephant at a nearby market. The first blind man approached the beast and felt the animal's firm flat side. "It seems to me that the elephant is just like a wall," he said to his friends.

The second blind man reached out and touched one of the elephant's tusks. "No, this is round and smooth and sharp - the elephant is like a spear."

Intrigued, the third blind man stepped up to the elephant and touched its trunk. "Well, I can't agree with either of you; I feel a squirming writhing thing - surely the elephant is just like a snake."

The fourth blind man was of course by now quite puzzled. So he reached out, and felt the elephant's leg. "You are all talking complete nonsense," he said, "because clearly the elephant is just like a tree."

Utterly confused, the fifth blind man stepped forward and grabbed one of the elephant's ears. "You must all be mad - an elephant is exactly like a fan."

Finally, the sixth man approached, and, holding the beast's tail, disagreed again. "It's nothing like any of your descriptions - the elephant is just like a rope."

And all six blind men continued to argue, based on their own particular experiences, as to what they thought an elephant was like. It was an argument that they were never able to resolve. Each of them was concerned only with their own idea. None of them had the full picture, and none could see any of the other's point of view. Each man saw the elephant as something quite different, and while in part each blind man was right, none was wholly correct.

On Jesus' Last Night, he and his disciples did not all see the same thing, and each of them saw something different. Some believe Jesus would soon be the king. Others were prepared for battle. Many were confused when Jesus said he must die. And one was prepared to turn him into the authorities. If Jesus were standing here right now, would we all experience and believe the same things about him? Maybe.  And maybe this is one of the reasons we keep repeating the story of the Last Supper each Lord's Supper/Communion.... to REMEMBER THE STORY RIGHT and remember Jesus' message about him and about us and what we're supposed to be doing in his name.

Show the Video: The Visual Bible: Matthew

Say: First we are going to watch the perspective of Matthew. It is very similar to Mark and Luke’s. Let’s see what Matthew recorded.

Cue the video to Matthew 26:17, "The Lord's Supper." Show the video until it states that Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn and left.

Ask: What happened in the video? Did the disciples seem to know what was going on or what Jesus was teaching?

Video: The Gospel of John

Let’s see what John records of that evening.

Cue the video by selecting “Chapter and Verse” from the menu. Scroll through and select John 13:1-20.
Note: When Jesus removes his outer cloak, expect some giggles. You may want to prepare the children to avoid the disruption.

Show through Judas departure.
Pause the video.

Ask: What was similar in the videos? They were eating. Jesus predicting his betrayal.
What was different? John showed Jesus washing feet and didn’t show what we now celebrate as the Lord’s Supper.

What is "the message" you learned from seeing this story?

Closing:

Have students make up a bunch of "Don't Forget" post-it notes. Tape or clip one or two to their own clothing and wear it when they leave the classroom so that others will ask, "Don't Forget What???"  (Don't forget the message!)

Close with a prayer asking for Jesus' help to remember his message of love and forgiveness and service to others.

The Last Supper

Video Workshop

Note:  This church calls their Video Workshop "Cast Your Net".

Summary of Lesson Activities:

The children will view the "Jesus" video segment on the Last Supper, discuss the old and new covenant, then sign their own covenant (relating to the Sunday School).

Concepts:

  • At the Last Supper, Jesus delivered the message of the "New Covenant" (agreement/promise) of God's forgiveness of our sins through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross.
  • The disciples didn't quite understand Jesus' message and were confused at the Last Supper. Like them, we need Christ's Spirit to help us understand.
  • We continue to celebrate Jesus' special meal and remember his message because he told us to "do it to remember me."

Scripture Reference:

Luke 22:7-20.

Leader Preparation:

  • Watch the Jesus video ahead of time
  • Gather the materials

Materials List:

  • TV/DVD player
  • “Jesus” Video. The Jesus video is also known as The Jesus Film and it can be downloaded for free or watched online at https://www.jesusfilm.org/watch
  • Posterboard to write the New Classroom Covenant on
  • Red pens

Lesson

Opening
:

Greet the children and introduce yourself.

Study:

Scripture/Bible Story:
Luke 22:7-20. Encourage the children to use their Bibles in looking up verses. Set up the story by reading out loud or have the students volunteer to read a verse.

Tell them they will watch a segment of the video “Jesus” where The Last Supper is taking place. Explain to them that Jesus had been preaching His message, and while many people have come to know Him as the Son of God, He has also made many enemies among the religious rulers who feel threatened by Him. His life is now in danger. But He is willing to risk His life as part of God’s plan to get the message through – the new covenant. It is now Passover in which an unblemished lamb was sacrificed as a seal of a covenant between God and Israel. Passover symbolizes the act by which God freed the slaves from captivity & Egyptian rule. Jesus wants to have a secretive Passover meal with his disciples and friends. The Passover meal commemorated the new covenant offered to the faith community by God who sets us free from our sins. Jesus’ blood sealed the new covenant

View the Jesus Video

After the “Welcome and Introductions” and the “Scripture/Bible Story” have them watch the video at the cued place (just before Jesus is tells Peter and John to go ahead of him to Jerusalem to prepare a place for the Passover meal). It should last about 5 minutes (finish with the Last Supper).

After setting up the story and watching the part of the video of the Last Supper, discuss and answer questions.

  1. What is another name for the Last Supper? The Passover meal
  2. What did Jesus serve at the Last Supper? Wine and unleavened bread (bread without yeast) because they were in such a hurry to prepare the meal they left the yeast out.
  3. What did the bread signify according to Jesus? His body
  4. What does the wine symbolize? His blood
  5. Why do we share in the Lord’s Supper/Communion now? To remember Jesus for what he did for us.
  6. Review the memory verse now: “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19. Have children repeat.
  7. What is a covenant? A binding agreement or promise.
  8. Why would Jesus refer to the cup as the “new” covenant? There must have been an old covenant.

Tell the kids you are going to talk about the old covenant. Ask them if they know what the old covenant is.

A "covenant" is an old word for "an agreement, a promise."

The old covenant is God’s agreement with Israel which was first given through Abraham and Moses. it was God's agreement with the people of Israel that he would "be their God," and they would "be his people."  The Passover Meal which Jesus celebrated with his disciples at the Last Supper, celebrated this Covenant and the story of God's rescue of his people from slavery in Egypt.

Jesus announced a "new" Covenant, a new promise that the people's sins would no longer be counted against them, and that God's love was for all people, and not just Israel. Jesus' death on the cross "sealed" (signified, proved) that this new agreement was true and happening now. And his resurrection was proof that Jesus was indeed the Messiah sent to deliver this all important message.

The "replacement" of the old covenant with the new covenant was predicted by the prophet Jeremiah, with which the Jews (including Jesus’ disciples) would be familiar. Have the children open their bibles to Jeremiah 31:31-34 and read it together. (You will want to read it to the younger children.)

  9. What does God promise to do in the new covenant according to Jeremiah? Write His law on our hearts; To be our God and we His people; Forgive us and remember our sins no more.
  10. How did God bring us the new covenant? God brought us the new covenant through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ – which was to come the day after the Last Supper (Good Friday).
  11. What sealed this new covenant? Jesus’ blood.

Signing a New Covenant for our Class

Tell the students that they will get to seal or sign a  CLASSROOM covenant or agreement as part of this lesson about Jesus' promise of the "New Covenant sealed in his blood."   We will sign it by writing our names using RED MARKERS and a RED THUMBPRINT.

NOTE:  The original lesson writer's "covenant" is not attached. You will have to come up with your own. Write it on a posterboard and decorate it with some Bible images.

A Sunday School Covenant is a positive statement of how each student agrees to act when they are in class.   Here are several statements you might want to adapt.

  • I promise to try my best to arrive on time ready to learn God's Word.
  • I promise to treat my fellow students and my teacher as I want to be treated, with respect, friendliness, and compassion.
  • I promise to share my thoughts, ideas, and questions, and to respect others when they do the same.
  • I promise to be helpful like Jesus asks us to, and to help others feel the love of God through my attitude and actions.
  • I promise to try my best to remember Jesus' message and share it with others.

Signing-Closing:

Have everyone paint their thumbs red with the marker and press their THUMBPRINT next to their name or each line of the Covenant as a "seal" on their promise that says, "I really mean this."  Close with a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to help us fulfill our promises.

Last Supper/Easter

Video Workshop

Summary of Lesson Activities:

Watch the video “The Easter Story” from "The Greatest Adventures" series, Hanna Barbera (preview below).

The first 13 minutes of this video covers the Last Supper, the second half covers Gethsemane through Empty Tomb.

NOTE: See Jaymie Derden's lesson using the same video.

Materials List:

  • “The Easter Story” (from "The Greatest Adventures" series, Hanna Barbera
  • Popcorn
  • Set up your video equipment and test it out

Lesson

Opening

Explain the purpose of today’s lesson and scripture in one sentence: We celebrate Communion because Jesus wants us to remember Him.

Ask them to tell you as much as they know about the Last Supper and Holy Week story.

Study

Scripture/Bible Story:
Read the Scripture. For younger children – show pictures as you read from Children’s Bible. You may want to use a Picture/story-book Bible.

Talk about The Last Supper, the elements used in communion (bread & wine). Symbols of communion.

Help the children understand that the bread and wine are important because of the meaning that Jesus gave them. Jesus used them as a way to help remind us of him and as a way of remembering what Jesus wants us to do.

Refer to the verse written on the board and talk about it.

Teach the kids where this verse is in the Bible,

Pass out the popcorn,

Video!

Begin the movie “The Easter Story” (from "The Greatest Adventures" series, Hanna Barbera). Decide in advance how much of the video you want to show. The first 13 minutes of this clip are about the Last Supper.

Questions to Ask After the Video:

  1. What is "The Last Supper"?  Why was it Jesus' "last" supper?
  2. What message did Jesus want his disciples to remember from this supper?
  3. What is the meaning of the bread? the cup?
  4. What happened after the Last Supper?
  5. If you had been at the Last Supper with Jesus...
  6. How would you have felt when he spoke about his death?
  7. When he said the "cup" was the new covenant "sealed in his blood," would you have been grossed out to take a drink from his cup?  What did he mean "sealed in his blood"?
  8. What questions would you have asked him?

Closing:

Ask: If someone asked you to sum up the message of the Last Supper in once sentence, what would you tell them? (Write everyone's answers on the board. See how 'few' words you can condense their answers down to.)   Write down the shortest answer/message they can come up with that still makes sense and write it on NAMETAGS for the students to wear out of the classroom.  Close with a prayer that people will ask them to share the message.

The Last Supper – A Meal to Remember

Movie Workshop

Summary of Lesson Activities:
The children will watch the animated “The Last Supper” (Jesus: A Kingdom without Frontier Series) from CCC of America Films. Jesus has been preaching his message, but now His life is in danger. This movie shows one of His last nights on earth as He shares in The Last Supper with His disciples.

Teacher preparation:

  • Read theological reference sheet.
  • Learn the memory verse.
  • Preview the movie so that you will know where good places are to stop and start for discussion and/or questions.
  • Consider the age level adjustments needed each week (those included in the lesson plan and your own).
  • Check out the room before your first Sunday workshop so that you know where everything is located.
  • Gather the materials.

Materials List:

  • “The Last Supper”
  • Popcorn

Advanced Preparation Requirements:

  • Pop the popcorn.
  • Have the DVD ready to go.

Presentation

Opening- Welcome and Introductions:
Greet the children and introduce yourself. Wear your name-tag. (Remember, you are interacting with a different group of students each week who may not know you.) Make sure the children are wearing name-tags.

Dig- Main Content and Reflection:

Application:
Introduce the film. Tell them it will be about Jesus, at the end of his life on earth. Jesus has been preaching his message, and while many people have come to know him as the Son of God, he has also made many enemies among the religious rulers & Roman authorities who are threatened by him. His life is now in danger. But he is willing to risk his life as part of a God’s plan to get God’s message through.

Pass Out Popcorn and Water

Play the movie:

“The Last Supper” from the “Jesus-The Last Frontier” series from CCC of America films, 30 minutes

Discussion:

  • Why did Jesus wash the disciples feet? This is a task usually reserved for servants; Jesus wanted to show that he was a servant, and that his disciples will be servants.
  • What did Jesus tell his disciples to do? Love one another as I have loved you. It is by your love for one another that people will recognize you as my disciples.
  • Ask for any other questions. The kids may ask about Jesus dying. This may be a scary idea for the younger ones. Try explaining that the enemies were afraid of Jesus, and that the enemies felt they had to protect themselves. Jesus needed to show the world He was willing to sacrifice himself rather than give up his message, but that He was brought back to life, as a final sign to everyone to prove He was the one and only God.

Review the memory verse.
If time permits, ask for volunteers to say it by themselves. Let them shout it!!!

Closing:

Closing prayer:
Dear Jesus, we thank you for the time we’ve had together and for the many blessings you’ve given us. Help us to be your new disciples, following your word each and every day.

Tidy and Dismissal:

  • Ask children to help tidy the room. Give any specific instructions for clearing the workshop room.
  • Collect nametags and any offering envelopes the children may have with them.
  • Give everyone the parent take-home flyer the first week of the rotation; give it only to children who were absent and have not yet received it the other weeks of the rotation.

Presentation

Opening- Welcome and Lesson Introduction
:

Greet the children and introduce yourself.

SAY: Before we begin, let’s say this month’s Bible verse together: “This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord. . . . .” Exodus 12:14

Opening prayer:
Ask if any student would like to lead the group in prayer. If not, be prepared to open the class time with prayer.

SAY: Today we are going to talk about remembering.

Have everyone stand up. Ask them about the following items. If they remember, have them move to one side of the room. If don’t recall, have them move to the other side.

  • You remember your first day of kindergarten.
  • You remember what color shirt you wore last Tuesday.
  • You remember what you had for breakfast this morning.
  • You remember what you had for dinner last Monday.
  • You remember the name of a friend.

SAY: It's hard to remember everything. There are some things that aren't so important to remember like what we ate for lunch. But there are other things that are very important to remember.

ASK: Can you think of important things that we need to remember? (allow a few answers)

View and Discuss the Video

SAY: Our Bible story today is about a time when Jesus told his disciples to remember him. Jesus and his disciples were sharing a special meal together, the Passover meal. It was the last time that Jesus would share a meal with his disciples. That’s why we call this meal the Last Supper. At this meal, Jesus gave his disciples instructions on how they could remember him. We’re going to watch the video first. When we are done, then we will read the story of Jesus Last Supper in the Bible.

Watch the DVD

View chapter 1 (about 3 min. 15 seconds long).
Pause after puppet Beth says, “It all began in the country of Egypt.” (When the cartoon starts showing the Israelites in Egypt.)

ASK: Had you ever heard of Maundy Thursday?
SAY: We celebrate Maundy Thursday in our church with a special church service.

View the rest of the movie skipping chapters 7 & 8 if time is short.
Stop after the narrator says, “Jesus loves you very much; he died and rose for you. (Picture shows empty tomb).

Say: Now we are going to read the story of the Jesus’ Last Supper from the book of Luke. (Luke 22:7-22) Read to students or let them take turns reading

Discussion:
ASK: What were the Beth and Digger celebrating: (Passover)

ASK: What was the meal they were preparing called? (A Seder)

ASK: What were some of the things that they were eating at the meal? (Parsley, salt water, hard boiled egg, **Stress the lamb, the wine, and the bread**)

ASK: They were told to eat a special kind of bread, what kind was it? (unleavened) What does that mean? (has no yeast) Why were the Israelites suppose to eat unleavened bread? (There wasn’t time to wait for the bread to raise because God wanted them to be ready to leave on a moment’s notice.)

ASK: What did they do to their homes so God would pass over and not kill the first born child or animal in the house? (They put the blood of the lamb on the door posts.)

SAY: At the Last Supper Jesus gave new meaning to the bread and wine of the Seder. Jesus took bread and asked his disciples to remember him. “Do this in memory of me” (vv 19)

ASK: Do we do something like this in our church where bread and a cup are shared with everyone, and we hear the minister say, “Do this in memory of me”? (Communion)

SAY: When we celebrate Communion, we are following Jesus’ example from the Last Supper in the Bible. The words spoken in church during Communion are the same ones Jesus spoke to his disciples at the Last Supper. We believe that Jesus is truly present in the bread that we eat and in the wine that we drink. During our closing this morning, I will read the words that Pastor Dean says before we take Communion.

ASK: What happens when we eat and drink food? (It gives us strength and gives us life. It becomes part of us). (Be prepared for any kind of answers on this one J - if “poop it out” comes up, deal with it – it’s part of God’s plan too.)

SAY: Just as what we eat and what we drink, so does Jesus become such a total part of us when we take Holy Communion.

ASK: What things do we have at our Communion table that were also in the Last Supper? (bread, cup)

SAY: We remember what Jesus did to free us from slavery to sin. Jesus’ body, like the bread, was broken for us when he died on the cross. The cup was a symbol of Jesus’ blood shed for us. Jesus blood on the cross was also like the blood of the lamb on the doorposts right before the Passover. The blood on the doorposts freed the Israelites from being slaves and the blood of Jesus on the cross freed us from sin.

Closing:
Say: At the Last Supper Jesus gave new meaning to the bread and cup. They no longer are just reminders of what God did to save the Hebrews in Egypt, but are what God did for the entire world when Jesus died on the cross. Jesus wants us to remember him when we break the bread, and eat with one another. In a couple years, you will be able to take Communion, but until then whenever you are at the Communion rail waiting for the Pastor’s blessing, think about all the things that make this meal so very special.

Journal Time – First of all, write this month’s Bible verse on the top of your page. Draw a picture of what you think the cup that Jesus used at the Last Supper looked like and what you think the bread looked like.

Question Time- If the students have any questions about Communion, this would be a good time to have them ask them. The wafers are either ordered from a church supply store or someone will bake special unleavened bread. The wine is ordinary wine but there is also apple juice available for those who prefer. There isn’t anything special about either the bread or the wine, but it is God’s Word and His Promise of forgiveness that makes our meal at the Altar so special.

Closing Prayer:
SAY: Next week you will be in a different room. Be sure and invite a friend who doesn’t go to Sunday School to come with you. You know, that’s what Jesus wants us do – to bring others to Him. Join hands, bow your heads, and close your eyes.
SAY: Before we pray the Lord’s prayer, I’m going to read to you from our hymnal what Pastor Dean (or any pastor for that matter) says before we take Communion. ELW pp 108
SAY: Let’s pray the Lord’s Prayer together.
† Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

“The Last Supper" Episode 110 in The New Superbook Series

This 25 minute episode really focuses on the kind of leader Jesus is and the example he sets for his disciples and the young boy Chris.  It includes the foot washing scene but does not spend much time on the "bread and cup." Instead, it focuses more on the kind of person "Chris" needs to learn how to be through Christ's example. It shows the larger context of the Last Supper's story. All in all, a nice "break" from "bread and cup-focused" videos.

Chris is getting big-headed because his band has been invited to audition for an American Idol-like show, called World’s Best Band. To address this issue, SUPERBOOK whisks the kids off to Jerusalem and Chris learns from Jesus that even though Jesus is famous, he was humble and served others during the Last Supper.  The gang ultimately returns home and Chris has a major shift in his attitude towards others.  Lesson:  Jesus is a true King because He serves and He asks us to do the same. (Animated - approx. 25 mins)

The following link takes you right to the Episode Player at CBN's Superbook website. You will need to register (for free) or sign in. https://us-en.superbook.cbn.co...ayer?v=3769066478001   Viewers outside the US will need to change the "country" flag at the top right of the player.  This is Season 1, Episode 110.

Superbook-Last-Supper

The DVD does not have chapter selections.  But, using your remote Next Scene (chapter) button you can move through the scenes.  I've given these Scenes names relating to the general theme of each scene.  They try to cover a lot in 22 minutes, so story events are touched on, but not always in full detail.  They also include the devil in scenes 1 & 9 and Jesus is very cut up and bloody after being whipped (whipping not shown).

1 - Conspiracy against Jesus
2 - Theme Song
3 - Chris' Home - He thinks he's a Rock Star
4 - Superbook transports them back to Bethany
5 - Messiah - Hebrew - the chosen one, anointed by God
6 - Who is the greatest? disciples arguing

Saddleback Kids' Video Shorts:

The Last Supper

Jesus Washes His Disciples Feet

Footwashing Lesson Video for Younger Children

"Zoe's Kids" the teaching ministry of Zoe Church in Dallas, has a nice animated YouTube video for younger children about the meaning and practice of Jesus washing Peter's feet in John 13.

The 7-minute video has three parts:

  1. An explanation of the practice and its meaning.
  2. Animated retelling of John 13's Jesus washing Peter's feet which uses the popular Saddleback Kids video clip
  3. A simple foot-washing craft younger kids could do at home.

But why stop there?

Why not do a REAL foot washing at the end of the video clip before moving on to the reminder craft!?

The 2008 BBC miniseries "The Passion" has a wonderful Last Supper scene in it.

It includes the foot washing, words of the Passover Seder, words of Institution, breaking of bread, sharing of cup, prediction of Peter's denial, betrayal of Judas, etc.

See the review of the movie and a YouTube video clip preview of the Last Supper scene exclusively here at rotation.org.

It was the day for the Passover meal. Jesus told Peter and John, “Go and get the Passover meal ready for us to eat?” “Where do you want us to go to get it ready?” they asked him. Jesus answered, “As you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters. He will show you a large furnished room upstairs where you will find everything ready.” (Luke 22:7-13)

Before the meal Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist. He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them. This is a custom in Jewish homes in Jesus’ day. When he came to Peter, Peter said, “Are you going to wash my feet, Lord?” “If I do not wash your feet you will no longer be my disciple.” Hearing this Peter answered, “Lord, do not wash only my feet, then! Wash my hands and head too.” (John 13:2-9)

When Jesus had finished washing the disciples’ feet he asked them, “Do you understand what I have just done to you?” You call me Teacher and Lord and I have washed your feet. You then, should wash one another’s feet. No slave is greater than his master and no messenger greater than the one who sends him. (John 13:12-16)

In the evening, while Jesus and the disciples were sharing the Passover meal, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples. “Take and eat it,” he said, “this is my body.” Then Jesus took the cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them. “Drink it, all of you,” he said, “this is my blood which seals God’s covenant.” (Matt. 26:26-28) [Note that a picture from Jesus feeding the 5000 is used here, as there is not a small 400px version of the Vallotton Last Supper/Breaking Bread drawing.]

During the meal Jesus said, “One of you will betray me.” The disciples are very upset and one by one asked him, “Surely Lord you don’t mean me?” Judas spoke up, “Surely, Teacher, you don’t mean me?” Jesus answered, “So you say.” (Matt.26:22, 25)

During his last meal with the disciples Jesus said, “One of you will betray me.” The disciples became very upset and began to ask him one after the other, “Surely, Lord, you don’t mean me.” Jesus answered, “One who dips his bread in the dish with me will betray me.” (Matt. 26:20-23)

After Jesus had said this he was deeply troubled and declared, “One of you is going to betray me.” The disciples looked at one another completely puzzled. Peter asked John, who was sitting close to Jesus, to ask Jesus who he is talking about. Judas left the room. (John 13:21-30)
