Summary of the Lesson Set

Scripture for the Set

  • Parable of the Mustard Seed - Matthew 13:31-32
  • Parable of the Leaven (Yeast) - Matthew 13:33
  • Parable of the Treasure in the Field - Matthew 13:44
  • Parable of the Pearl - Matthew 13:45-46

Additional Scripture:  "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it?" Luke 13:18

Summaries of Lessons

Bible Background and Lesson Objectives

Written in a devotional style for teachers that gets to the heart of the parables, and the challenges of  interpreting parables to children. Includes a kid-friendly definition of "What is the Kingdom of God" and a primer on how to begin to "unlock" the meanings found in Jesus' parables.  OPEN TO ALL.

Birdhouses! Students focus on the Parable of the Mustard Seed, with special attention paid to Jesus' description of the Kingdom as a tree where birds feel safe to nest.

Computer Workshop

"The Cinnamon Roll Parables" ...an exemplary Rotation-Model Cooking Workshop lesson that turns the process of creating and eating into a tasty lesson of teachable moments. Features a recipe that can be made and baked within 30 minutes.

Drama Workshop

elephant-tuskStudents re-enact the parables using an overhead projector (or LCD projector) and guide script. This lesson also includes a special focus and skit on the importance of listening and sharing with each other in order to see "the whole elephant" and not just part of it.

Science (Awesome Experiments!) Workshop

foamStudents perform several exciting experiments, including making a Kingdom metal detector and  with fun and meaningful results.  

Video ~ Storytelling Workshop

Students will easily* create their own video versions of the four parables using the time-lapse feature common on today's smartphones, or using a free stop-motion smartphone app that produces fun and memorable results.
