Flaming Votive Holders

 -- Posted by Heidi

Note: moderator suggests - use battery operated TEA LIGHTS  for all ages!

This craft may take some prep but it's fun.

TIP: The larger the 'cup' size for your candle holder, the EASIER it is for your kids to design on the cup surface with tissue paper. Suggested minimum: 4" high by 3" wide. A large clear plastic cup works well.

SUGGESTION

Use two cups.

CUT one of the cups about 1/2" up from the bottom so that it can fit over a second cup and act as a "sleeve" which can be rotated. Now Paste your flames on the inside of the inner cup, and Paste your characters on the outside of the sleeve. This allows your students to TURN the outer sleeve against the flame background. When the tealight is placed inside the inner cup it is a very nice effect.

Materials:

  • small baby food jars (or plastic cups)
  • tissue paper -- red, yellow orange and black
  • white craft glue
  • paintbrushes
  • battery operated "tea lights" (readily found on line) to act as the "flame"

Preparations:

  • wash food jars and remove labels
  • from black tissue pre-cut silhouette of either Jesus figure or 4 men in the
    flames

Instructions:

  • tear up pieces of red, orange and yellow tissue paper into large chunks.
  • brush slightly diluted glue onto surface of baby food jar and cover with pieces of tissue paper.
  • brush another layer glue over-top of tissue covered jar
  • (here's the part they may need help with)

put the black cutout onto the jar and brush one more layer of glue over-top.

This should dry relatively quickly. Then you can put a votive or tea-light (tea-light shine better but are harder to light).

In addition if you want you can add a Bible verse or something like "God is with us" on a circle of paper glued to the baby food jar lid.

Adaption Suggestions

-- CROSS

  1. cut the shape of the cross out of light colored construction paper and glue that onto the jar first, then glue several layers of torn tissue paper (red, yellow, orange) over the whole jar.
  2. I made the 'point' of the tissue paper go up, so as to look like a flame.
  3. When the votive is dry, you cannot see the cross, but once you light the tea-light, it is in plain view!

-- DRAW ON STICK FIGURES & WORDS
  1. We used battery operated tea-lights, for all ages, and inexpensive small vases (the ones we used at the time were 4-sided, but round would also work) from a local dollar store (opening must be wide enough to get a battery operated tea-light Art 2008 Fire Furance 2in and out).
  2. First - draw four stick men on outside of glass with black permanent marker.
  3. Then print the words "God is with us", around the vase, under or above their stick men.
  4. Now apply tissue paper with glue as above.
  5. When the candle is lit in a darkened room the four men and words show clearly.

Have them share the story of the fiery furnace with friends and family using their art project as a story prop.

  6. Photo of two Fiery Furnace's made by our kids.
