jesuscaresAn Overview of the SunScool App

This free app for younger and older kids is very cool, deep, fun to use, and age-adaptable. There's so much to it that it is hard to describe without the app in front of you. PREVIEW IT by downloading the free app from the Sunscool.org website. GoodSam-SunScool-Example

Key Take-Aways:

  1. Works on Smartphones, Tablets, Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac.
  2. Each of the Bible story presentations features narration, animation, and verse games and quizzes interspersed within each story.
  3. Each story has narrated text onscreen and Bible verses you can pop up that are quoted from or based on the NIV.
  4. Stories adjust their scope, vocab, and game content depending on the AGE LEVEL YOUR SELECT, meaning the app has over 170 different possible Bible stories to choose from.
  5. A "guiding hand" appears onscreen to prompt students what to do next. This guidance system increases its help in younger levels.

AgeLevel

When you first open the app it asks you for your age so that it can adjust its "help" system for you (I really liked that feature).  Level 3 is the sweet spot for children who can read up to about fifth graders. Levels 1 and 2 tell less of the story and have easier and fewer activities. Importantly, selecting a level also adjusts the story content itself, availability of certain stories, and story titling. Read more about that in the Guide below.

More app details:

  • Modestly animated stories with kid-friendly narration.
  • Can be downloaded to just about any type of smartphone, iPad or Android tablet, or Windows PC. Internet required to download the app and individual stories.
  • Lots of "during the story" and "after the story" activities geared to the story, including word searches, memory verses, and quiz questions ---with 'helps' based on your age.
  • Kids win diamond awards for reading and completing each activity and story.
  • The game reminds them what they have left to do in a story.
  • Based upon the free multi-lingual Bible lessons for children produced by Bible Educational Services, a UK international Bible ministry.
  • Generally ecumenical (with some things you may want to say differently).

When installing the Windows version on a PC, you may get a blue box warning you not to install the program. It's fine. Click "DETAILS" and select "RUN ANYWAY."

Search2The next post below features our comprehensive outline of the SunScool Bible App's lesson presentations.

Our outline follows the order of stories as they appear in the App's menu.

However, unlike the App's story menu which changes depending on the age level you have selected, our comprehensive outline shows you all the stories in all four age levels, and the story titling variations between the age levels.

The outline below is also SEARCHABLE across all four age levels so you can find a story based on its keywords or scripture citation.

We've also created specific Christmas and Holy Week outlines so you can quickly find where certain stories are found in the app and at what age level.

This outline took many hours to create and is only possible because of the generous spirit of our Supporting Members. If you appreciate helpful and unique resources like this one, support our site's work by becoming a Supporting Member today.

Rotation.org's Outline to the
SunScool Bible App Lesson Index

a Rotation.org resource, v2.2

Below is a list of all the Bible stories as seen in all four levels of the SunScool Bible App Menu. The APP itself can only show you the stories available in the age level you selected. You'd have to change age levels to see if a story appears in another level too. While many stories are found in multiple age levels, not all are, and the titles and their location in the App's menu can change depending on the age level you're in. Yes, that's a bit confusing, and it's one of the reasons we created this comprehensive menu -- to help you KNOW if your story is in the app, what part of the menu it's found in, what age levels have it, and what titles it may go by.

The App was designed for a single student, whereas in Sunday School use, you'll like pick and choose between stories across more than one age level. This guide will help you do that.

searchYou can SEARCH THIS OUTLINE now in your browser by pressing "Ctrl+ F" on your keyboard and searching by a Bible story keyword or passage. (Command + F on a Mac).

We've also created a handy PDF of this entire outline that Supporting Members can download, search offline, or print. You need to be a Supporting Member to download the PDF! Join now.

The App presents you with two menu options:

mceclip01. The first is the LESSON INDEX link seen at the top of the app's Home page. This opens a text menu that's searchable by keyword (very handy). However, it only searches for stories within your level, and not across all four levels.

2. The second menu option is the STORY ICON MENU that appears on the app's homepage. Simply scroll the icons to download and open a story.

Note that some "big" stories, like the Cross and Resurrection, have lessons spread across THREE story menu areas: "Peter," "Cross," and "Death of Christ." To see them all together, we've created a separate comprehensive "Cross and Resurrection Stories" menu, as well as a separate comprehensive "Christmas Stories" menu.

It is important to remember that the menu of available stories and their titles can CHANGE depending on what age-level you select. Typically, Levels 1 and 2 have the same stories and story titles. However, the menus and story titles are often different in Levels 3 and 4, and some stories may only be found in certain levels. That's one BIG reason we created this comprehensive outline - so you can find out which level has the story you need to teach.

You will also notice that some story sub-menus don't follow the biblical order. For example, Noah's story menu is followed by Peter's, and Peter's stories are split into two sections. As well, the Christmas stories are split into three groups, and some Christmas stories don't appear in certain levels. (The app's somewhat confusing menus and changing story titles are due to how the app grew over time and the curriculum it was following.)

The scripture citations listed in the Outline usually come from Level 4. Levels 1 and 2 typically shorten the passage. Preview your chosen story in your preferred level to make sure it covers the verse you need to cover.

Peter - BibleTime

Not all of the following Peter stories are found in all four levels, and the titling changes quite a bit between the levels. The numbering of lessons in this section is also confusing so we've left them off.

"Apostle" Peter (Book of Acts) - BibleTime  (Level 3 and 4)

In Levels 1 and 2, SunScool renumbers the Apostle Peter "A5" lessons to "A7" and moves them after the Abram menu (for some reason). Levels 1 and 2 also have more "Apostle" Peter (Acts stories). See graphic below.

Levels 3 and 4:

  • Apostle-Peter-stories-Acts-L1-2A5-1 : Peter Preaches (L3), Pentecost  (L4)
    Acts 2:1-42; Luke 24:49

Patriarchs - BibleTime

The SunScool app confusingly splits up the Abraham and Jacob stories. Read these notes carefully. To find Abraham stories for Levels 1 and 2, look for them under the "Abraham and Isaac" section of the main menu which only appears when you select those levels.

Levels 3 and 4:

  • A6-1 : Trusting God (L3), Abraham. His Call (L4)
    Genesis 11:27-32 - 12:1-9
  • A6-2 : Choices (L3), Abraham. His Choice (L4) traveling to Egypt
    Genesis 12:5,10,20 & 13:1-18 & 14:1-16

  • A6-4 : Test of Love (L3), Abraham. The Challenge  (L4), Issac, sacrifice
    Genesis 22:1-19

Note:
We're still in the Patriarch's section of the menu. But there is also a second section of Jacob stories titled "Jacob and His Family" seen further down this outline that appears when you select Level 4 in the app. It has several different Jacob stories.

Levels 1 and 2 for younger children have four Jacob stories:

  • A9-1: Jacob deceives his brother
    Genesis 25:19-34
  • A9-2: Jacob deceives his father
    Genesis 27:1-29
  • A9-3: Jacob meets God (stairway to heaven)

    Genesis 25:19-34 & 27:1-48

    Genesis 27:41-46 & 28:1-22; Genesis 35:1-15

    Genesis 18:15; 29:1-30 & 31:1-21
  • A7-4: Jacob, The Discovery (Jacob meets Esau)
    Genesis 32:1-32
  • See more Jacob stories in the "jacob and his family" section that appears when you select Level 4.

Abraham and Isaac

When you select either Level 1 or 2  you will see this Abraham and Isaac menu and the following lesson entries. Keep in mind that several of these stories are also found in the "Patriarchs" section when you select Level 3 or 4. It's confusing for sure, but this outline should help you find what you need!

  • A5-1: Abram leaves home (departs for Canaan)
    Genesis 12:1-8
  • A5-2: Abram and Lot (Lot departs, Abram at Mamre)
    Genesis 13:1-18

Christmas story lessons found in the SunScool Bible App

Outline of SunScool's Christmas Bible stories
~ organized by Bible story ~

This supplemental outline was drawn from our main outline but it organizes the presentations by scripture passage so that you can find your story and then see which part of the app's 3 Christmas menus it is found in, and at what age-level (story availability and titles changes from level to level).

For example...
All four age levels have a lesson on Matthew 1:18-25, The Angel Visits Joseph, but...

  • In Levels 1 and 2, the Angel visits Joseph lessons are found in First Christmas: Part 2.
  • In Level 3, the Angel visits Joseph lesson is in First Christmas: Part 3.
  • In Level 4, the story of the angel visiting Joseph is found in First Christmas: Part 1.

(The lesson index does have a Search feature, but it doesn't search across all four levels, only the one you're in.)

These issues are likely due to how the app was expanded over time and the fact that they didn't imagine a teacher wanting to search all four levels for a particular story. We've suggested they tweak their search feature and menus, but until they do, this outline is here to help.

Holy Week ~ Palm Sunday, Last Supper, Cross, and Resurrection stories found in all four levels of the SunScool Bible App

Outline of Holy Week lessons found in the SunScool Bible App

We created our own comprehensive listing of all the Palm Sunday, Last Supper, Cross, and Resurrection stories found in all four levels of the SunScool Bible App.  We did so because the App's menu splits up its stories of Holy Week across many different sub-menus, some of which appear or don't appear depending on which age-level you have selected (L1, L2, L3, or L4). We know, however, that a teacher with younger children (Level 2 kids) can easily adapt to a story only found in Level 3, so it's helpful to know WHICH LEVEL has the story you want to teach -- and this guide does that!

How to use this listing:
Pick the Holy Week story you want to teach then scan our outlineto  see what lessons are available in the app in all four levels. Then go to the app, select the age level your story is located in, and scroll down to the Menu's sub-section to find the story you want to use.
